I note these population figures for California directly from city-data.com.

Births 2000-2006: 3,375,297

Deaths 2000-2006: 1,465,929

Internal migration 2000-2006: -950,592

International migration 2000-2006: +1,724,790

Apparently lots of people are doing their best to "escape California" while they are being more than replaced by foreigners with high birth rates. The simple fact is that middle class Californians are leaving in droves. I don't think there is a nicer state in the country than California. That being said, the bloom is off the rose. The best times are in the rear view mirror. Someone here mentioned politics. Increasingly if you're not a hard retro left wing ldeologue one is going to feel more and more marginalized in California. Isn't there a thread here about Gavin Newsom becoming the next governor? Yes it's true that people like to b**** and complain about places more than praise them on C-D. That's because there is no "there" to escape anymore. California used to be one of those very special places. We are all the poorer for it. You can see where it's headed. It would have been great to start a new life in California a couple of generations ago. Today, unless you have the really big bucks it's going to be a hard struggle.

Yep. The California my grandparents came to in the 40's isn't the same place I find myself today. Most of my family has already left. I have 8 first cousins, 6 of which were born in California. Only is left here.

California is what you make of it. But so is every other state. CO works well for me right now.

Very friendly, But, Huntsville is a huge melting pot. People here are from everywhere. They came (and continue to come) for the jobs. Even in Colorado people were friendly to me.

In Colorado, people are nice to me in person, but on the road, with my CA plates, I can do no right. Fortunately I just put my new CO plates on today.

sorry, I just thought your comment sounded a little insensitive. It sounds like you have done alright for yourself. I am curious did you do everything (schooling, housebuying, travel) by yourself no help from parents, husband loans any good luck at all or was it all done by you?

Having experienced the past 40 plus years here, for me personally, there was a turning point toward the negative during the 1980s. Don't get me wrong, money wise I'm good, own property in a good place, etc. I also get my fill, constantly, of what the Formerly-Golden-State has to offer. My issue is more cultural (maybe even, spiritual?). The overwhelming of the original Old West culture of this state made it less comfortable. I really miss that. Oh sure, there are still pockets out there. But it is long past the point of no return. It's hard for most people who live here today to understand what I mourn. You'd have to have been here prior to the mid 80s (and beyond that, you'd have to have been something besides an insular center city urbanite) to completely comprehend this. Indeed, the best days are passed for the Formerly-Golden-State. I'll stick it out as long as it makes sense, but at some point, my tolerance of the People's Republic of Kalifornia may run dry.
