I don't doubt it. I'm much older than you and we had the same in high school. A number of my classmates had their rifles attached to the gun rack in the rear window of their truck. Funny, no one ever disturbed them. Different times, though.

Yeah, it's actually surprising how many palm trees you do see in Redding. But they can take the heat.

It's also at a slightly higher elevation than Sacramento -- minimum 500 feet from what I understand. So that, plus being farther north, definitely seems to increase those snow chances. Sacramento virtually never sees even snowflakes fall, but I just learned that Redding seems to have a day or two of a light dusting almost every winter. Did not realize that.

At the same time, the slightly higher elevation keeps that tule fog farther down the Valley and, during dry spells, can push those winter temps well into the 70s or even beyond -- also pretty unheard of in Sacramento. So I think Redding is a bit more like Vegas like that.

Lived and worked in the Redding area right out of college and spent a lot of time in NorCal growing up in Southern Oregon. Redding is … not great. A bit down in the heels, with plenty of mid-level commerce but relatively low aspirations. Downtown is lacking, and incomes are low compared to housing. Not a bad base to go boating or hiking, but not a place to seek in relocation.

It depends what you want regarding relocation. I think it would be an Ok place to retire to.

Doesn't it snow in the winters, though?

Average rent for a 1 bedroom apartment in Redding is surprisingly low, ranging from $900-$1,200. Price of houses are also pretty cheap, $400-500k. I did some research you won't find any other locale with the combination of a sunny/hot climate, affordable COL, and high minimum wage. Phoenix and Vegas metros? too expensive and overcrowding, St. George, Utah? colder in winter, pay is very low and the COL is increasing. South/Central Florida? increasingly expensive and getting overcrowded. Southern California? extremely expensive and overcrowded

That could be. May also be a lot of retirees that moved there and who come with larger pensions. Can't really say for sure on that sort of thing.
