Redding, and Shasta County have the highest gun ownership rate in the state. One gun shop alone in Redding sells 250 weapons a day. That is more likely than a church to have an effect on crime, fear of getting shot by the intended victim.

If I had any intent to commit a crime up there, that would give me something to think about. If you're sane and safe with weapons, and don't go off half-cocked (pun intended), you can never have too many guns.

Don't forget to consider wildfire risk in Redding. Anywhere outside the urban core, such as semi-rural or WUI, is exceptionally high risk.

In practical terms, this can mean lengthy evacuations, dealing with terrible air quality for weeks at a time, and/or the loss of property. It may also mean very high insurance premiums.

I spent exactly 1 year in Phoenix before I left, and we visited Las Vegas ( from Orange County, CA ) maybe a dozen times, in different seasons. Compared to these cities Redding is pure joy.

First of all Redding has the Sacramento River and Shasta Lake, if you like fishing, boating, or a break from the heat. There is hunting, if that's what you like. There are trees, not palm trees but oaks and pines, with actual shade for protection.

Redding traffic, again compared to Vegas, Phoenix, or Los Angeles, is a walk in the park. I'm not familiar with the cost of living though.

We are happy in our town of Paradise, but come another fire and we might just end up in Redding. Vegas ? Phoenix ? Not for a free house and all expenses paid.

^^^^^ Except for nice people with a sense of humor crammed into the Starbucks (because it was so hot outside), the above was the impression I got during a few days there in the summer of 2014.

I've stopped off at Redding for a nights rest several times on the way north. From what I've seen of the place that's about all it's worth, a one night stay

I've been google map street viewing Redding and can see some palm trees here and there, given the climate it makes sense

There are beautiful areas in Redding, but you do have to get out of your car or hotel room.

We used to do that too, on the way south, but since we discovered the Best Western Miner's Inn in Yreka. It shortens our first day drive a bit, and there is a great restaurant for dinner, Jefferson's Roadhouse. The we zip right through Redding the next morning.

Yup yup. I have a "few" of them. I hunt, shoot, reload. It's almost like I was born with em, oh ya, I was. From Colorado. We left firearms in our cars/trucks while in school so we could go hunt after our last class. Our art teacher took us duck hunting. He was a horrible shot lol.
