They have already identified $600B in funding, which is massive. Im very curious to see how this plays out.

This is a vision I have always been hoping for! California / Bay Area should be able to do it.
Invest and create new funding sources like sovereign wealth fund, water exporter, and hydrogen exporter etc.

Then make sure Californians/ the people come first with making sure there is a safety net like towers of housing, medical care, higher education, and ubi similar to scandinavian countries and united arab emirates millions of citizens being well taken care of and prevented from falling into unhousing.

Look up NEOM the $500 billion dollar city being built by saudi arabia.

California needs to have a visionary plan as well improving its three distinct regions: San Francisco, Fresno, and Los Angeles.

Paying people that don't want to work? What could go wrong with that?

Hey comrade, the problem with socialism is, at some point you run out of OTHER PEOPLE'S money.

Unsurprisingly, you demonstrate zero understanding of what UBI is, or how it has worked elsewhere.

First off, it doesn’t “pay people who don’t want to work.” It is a social dividend paid equally to every citizen over age of 18, regardless of their wealth of income levels. That’s right: Elon Musk would get a check every month equal to the amount received by ysr_racer, tulemutt, and Henry Homeless down the street a ways from you.

Second, pilot UBI programs have demonstrated that the poorest recipients used the money for mostly necessities and actually pursued employment at increased rates because of higher motivation to improve given basic needs were within reach.

That all clarified for you, I didn’t read any UBI information in the linked OP article, so I can't say whether this proposal structures any UBI along truly universal lines.

And, btw racer, before you continue ranting ignorantly about “leftist” this and that: UBI is a very very old concept in civilization … embraced in modern day by numerous conservative, libertarian, and liberal economists alike. In fact, it’s first big appearance on the American scene was proposed by the Nixon administration and passed the Senate, however lost in the House. Another champion of a UBI proposal was conservative Nobel Prize winning economist Milton Friedman. Yeah, Reagan’s economics guru.

Also unsurprisingly, you demonstrate zero understanding of the foundational funding for UBI: dismantling almost the entire welfare system and re-allocating those monies to UBI equal payments.

Also unsurprisingly you continue to embarrass yourself with your lack of knowledge. Giving people money never works out, they have no skin in the game.

Paying me or Elon Musk with our own money is foolish. Neither he nor I need it. And homeless people don't deserve it.

You guys are great at spending MY MONEY.

Lol. Really. I’m not one bit embarrassed to know what I’m talking about. You clearly have zero knowledge about this subject, yet you feel compelled to comment in ignorance. Heh.

To quote an old Clint Eastwood movie line: ‘Deserve ain’t got nothin to do with it.’

It’s a dividend. For being an American in the world’s most successful economy. And you have no idea what any particular homeless person deserves or not. You have been privileged and fortunate. Lucky you.

In order for any society to function successfully, taxes must be paid and errors and failures must be cleaned up along with all other management and necessary investment in the future. It’s not YOUR money. It’s your investment share / membership dues. You want a clean, well functioning club or not?

Read again the parts above where I identified economists of all stripes with certainly greater grasp of the costs of society than you.

Really? "For being an American?"

Perhaps you've never heard of the California Stimulus currently being sent out. $600 to Americans. $1000 to illegals.

Do you really think this UBI will only go to Americans???

Just like when California started paying more in monthly welfare checks than other states, and we magically ended up with nearly 1/3 of the country's welfare recipients. If this goes through, those areas will be flooded with illegals for the free paycheck.

But I guess the rest of the state can afford it. Right?

100% This^

Apparently, the plan for UBI extends beyond the Bay Area. The proposal is to allocate a monthly payment og $500 to every man, woman and child in the state.

In a way tho, I am of a similar mindset as ysr_racer in the sense that people like me don't really need this so we shouldnt be included. Why dont we cut off these payments at people earning under $100,000 for a single person tax filer, and under $200,000 for a joint-couple tax filer. Them and their dependents?
