they are not called "HILL BILLY" in California

the correct name is the "OAKIE" just like the movie Grapes of Wrath

the Hill Billy is from places like West Virginia, North Carolina or the Ozarks

in California it's the "OAKIE" and most orginated from the mid west or "Dust Bowl" from places like Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas

thats why lots of native Californians still have that mid western accent

You are right, except it is spelled " Okie" like Oklahoma, not " Oakie" like Oak tree or Oakland. Someone from Arkansas is called " Arkie". I honestly don't know the nickname for Texans. " Tex" , perhaps?. Uh oh I may have just started a flame war. Remember no matter where you hail from in the U.S. we're all " Mericuns".

Yes, trona is like no other place in the state. People there are really weird.

Okay, first of all the Ozarks extend into eastern Oklahoma and northwestern Arkansas. And Arkansas, Texas, and most of Oklahoma are NOT in the Midwest. Those are SOUTHERN states. Look at a map.

This whole thread is just a ridiculous parade of woefully misinformed commentators making broad, glaringly ignorant generalizations about poor white people from a safe distance. Just because a person is from a rural area or is from a working class background does not mean they are "hillbillies" or "rednecks." That sounds as stupid as some guy from the South saying that everyone who lives in California is a pot smokin', tree-huggin' homosexual.

I agree with your post, although there are a lot of tree huggers in California

Those aren't hillbillies. Those are over-aged, moth-eaten hippie throwbacks from the Bay Area '60s.
