Just look at a map of rural poverty (especially in inland counties) and you'll have your answer.

Rednecks tend to be very stupid.

Hillbillies are generally smarter than rednecks and can easily live without modern day accouterments. You will never see a hillbilly in a jacked up truck, over-powered bass boat. Hillbilly homes tend to be simple (albeit messy). Rednecks furnish their homes with over designed oak furniture, Thomas Kinkade "Art" and brass trimmings - items you will never see in a Hillbilly hovel.

Hillbillies will live off the land as much as possible. Rednecks can be seen at Waffle Houses, Bob Evans.
Rednecks like New Country Music. Hillbillies like old school country music.

Hillbillies usually vote Democrat. Rednecks vote Republican

In between these two there is a lot of grey area overlap, and therein lies the confusion.

Nothing like a broad brush.

I am hillbilly but not poor, yet.

Rednecks live in the country. Think "farms". Hillbillies live in the hills and mountains.

There are plenty of urban places where people exhibit redneck behavior...Including NYC.

True. I don't think there are any real Hillbillies in the whole state. People confuse the term redneck with Hillbilly. Or they just don't know what the heck they're talking about in general. How many of the posters have even been in every county in California? More than ten counties? Five?

Rednecks love their guns and are god fearing and they aren't very cultured people. The second amendment is the most important thing in their life while they wave the Gadsden Tea Party flag and mumble anti-gay slurs. Them immigrants be takin' their jobs too. Merica'!
