There are similar towns in the North State. They would be a shock to the system for most Southern Californians. The North State, and its residents, are quite a bit different than urban California residents, almost as if it really were another state.
I think Barstow, Baker and Needles in the southern California desert can be added to the list. I do agree about Oroville, too.

Oroville may be hick but its no more of a "meth lab" than Salinas. I lived there seven years in the late 90s/early 2000s - The Californian and KSBW were always reporting on tweakers and the Mexican narco gangs manufacturing it in Salinas and Prunetucky.

I didn't see Doyle, Herlong, Ravendale and Wendel on this list. We always joke they could film 'The Hills Have Eyes' at these places.

Yes, we have some meth in the outskirts (definitely Prunedale), but there also a lot of positives in the community with the agricultural economy, and we are very close to the Monterey Peninsula (20-30 mins) and reasonably close to Silicon Valley (slightly more than an hour). We also have development of our downtown improving (usually called Oldtown Salinas) and the Steinbeck Center. There is also Northridge Mall/Harden Ranch/Westridge for shopping on our north side and a good trail system in the Creekbridge neighborhood that is near where I live.

There are more positives here than Oroville. Oroville strikes me as maybe an OK place for someone to retire with the outdoor areas (Feather River) and you are not too far from Chico if you want more to do on the weekend.

BTW, I never specifically mentioned the meth in Oroville. Another poster did. I had heard that it had been hick from several other people. I actually dated a girl from Oroville who moved to San Jose. She was nice. I am not saying there is nothing good there.

Lodi... I've never felt so much racial tension in California.

But pretty much everything east/north of central valley.

That does not equal "hillbilly" (especially when the place is flat as the proverbial pancake).
