Some parts of California definitely don't fit the norm. I have family in Butte County (Oroville) and I'm always stunned when I go to visit them - there are so many fat people and it seems every other person smokes to boot. Its a rather poor community - seems to have a correlation on both problems.

One of the biggest correlations of obesity and lifestyle is related to density. If you can walk around your neighborhood to do errands it makes a difference. Driving everywhere doesn't help. Also access to fresh ingredients is important. So if you went a little bit deeper, the rural states or regions with a suburban density pattern are more likely to have higher obesity than non rural states.

In California we are lucky, since we are the home of all of the nations produce. We just need to improve access in our poorer urban areas at a low cost.

That chart is skewed, this show Metro areas that include places in CA.

I personally think of Fast Food and places like Old Country Buffet, Golden Corral that make people obese, lived in the South and I saw the overweight people but I don't think they were living on a fixed diet of Fried Chicken, Grits, Collard Greens and Okra.

If you are personally fit, why do you care if some redneck in West Virginia is fat?

The DC Metro area is the fittest in the nation. I'm sure it's a function of average age, education level, and ethnic mix.

Exactly.
But at the same time, I'm taking my life in my hands whenever I ride my bicycle in either CA or WV due to insatiable appetite of driving.

Oddly enough, the car culture of CA has done nothing to make many bulbous over here.

Because the open-minded Ugly Californian needs to put down people from rural areas to give themselves a false sense of superiority and sophistication.
