Just what is it about socialism that you find so horrible?
Because they're told that it's bad. Most people know little about what socialism actually is.

Well, I lived and experienced it first hand for 8 years. My husband and his family lived and experienced it their entire lives, as did our friends in the UK. They most definitely are NOT satisfied their lives or the health care provided to them through the NHS.

I've been down this road too many times with people who have never actually experienced it fully, yet think a NHS system would be great for the USA. My only advice is for these people to move to a socialistic country for a few YEARS, not weeks or months, live at the standard income of the general populace, and then come back and tell me how wonderful the system is. My husband and I, after being back in the USA for nearly two years now, are STILL going through extensive dental treatments to repair the damages done by British dentists. I am currently undergoing numerous health tests with my doctor but British doctors neglect to provide even the most basic of check-ups, including checking weight, blood pressure and heart. The doctors and dentists in the UK had 44 years to ruin my husband's health and teeth, it only took them 8 years to ruin mine.

I respect your experience in the UK. However, you are one example in ONE such country, a country that isn't completely socialist anyway.

Individually I am one example, but add my son, my husband, his rather large family, all of our friends back in the UK who want OUT and co-workers here who are also British, and that is quite a large mix. The UK is currently making moves towards a more American type system because their system is NOT working. However, the UK is such a mess, and some people are now so deeply entrenched in a "Nanny State" type of society that the changes sought may not be successful for another three or four generations.

Even France and the Netherlands are finding that the system is crumbling into chaos.

GB ranks 29th in the survey I quoted. To consider GB a good example of socialism is to call Mississippi a progressive state.

That said, the folks I know in Britain who have money are pretty happy. Of course they are buying homes in the south of France because of British weather, but, that they can afford that half million dollar second home, shows that at least some British have done very well.

And how it's perceived is very dependent upon which form of socialism.

Their system is not working because they have embraced aspects from the American system.

I was going to say that but didn't want to start anything. Once the American system starts to be introduced, the middle class starts to disappear...wait...why does this sound familiar?

Interesting that the two nations with the worlds best healthcare, France and Netherlands are the two she said weren't working.
I suppose it depends on how you define working.

One of the best measures of a nations healthcare system is infant mortality, the US ranks 17th in infant mortality, all countries doing better than the US, are socialist.
