My Sunday School class is titled "Faith and Literature", in order to stay flexible and inclusive for people who drop in and out depending on their schedules, we only read short stories. There are several good collections that include stories that lend themselves to interpretation and discussion on faith based topics.

I have been so surprised about how much I am enjoying the short story genre. I have been gobbling up stories - many of which I read once in school.

So far, my favorite authors are Tobias Wolff, Flannery O'Connor and Raymond Carver. My favorite story that we have discussed in our class is probably "The Shawl" by Cynthia Ozick.

Are there any other short story lovers here? What are your favorites?

I love to listen to short stories. Here's a wonderful weekly, public radio program where stories by new and established writers are read by stage and screen actors. Produced by Symphony Space in NYC. The program is not carried by stations in my city so I listen via free podcast, however by doing so I have amassed a large collection of audio treasure One can also purchase CD collections of various types of stories, which help to support the program.

Loved it.

I had not read it yet, but our book club will be reading Olive Kitteridge in a couple months. It is a collection of short stories with recurring characters.

Always loved Ray Bradbury's short stories.

edited to add:

How could I forget the short stories of Saki!
They amazed me as a young girl, and now as an older adult I can appreciate them even more.

One of my favorite authors is Jeffrey Archer. He has several collections of short stories. If I remember correctly one of them is titled "THIRTEEN RED HERRINGS". He has several more and they are all great.

Another audio treasure Did anyone hear Bailey White's story "The Wedding Horse" yesterday? Just wonderful hearing it read by the author. Following a decade-long tradition, All Things Considered presents a Bailey White Thanksgiving story.

Read, listen or download an mp3 podcast here Bailey White: 'The Wedding Horse' : NPR Other of the stories are available back to 2000.

This is an obit but I have always read it as a short story. William Allen White was a hero of mine when I was a schoolgirl in Kansas. He was way before my time, of course, but his legacy carries on to this day with the William Allen White Award for literature.

This quick read is about the death of his daughter, Mary White. No matter how many times I read it I still cry. It's beautiful.

I like short stories but never know where to find good ones. I usually wind up getting "America's Best Short Stories" every year or some such.
