"So far, my favorite authors are Tobias Wolff, Flannery O'Connor and Raymond Carver."
I have a complete collection of Flannery O'Connor's short stories sitting right in front of me on the table. Incredible writer, some of it is very, very funny. She used words that are not politically correct now, or rather her characters used them, but she was writing in another era and always from the Southern angle. Pity she died so young. If writing was like art, hers would be up there w/ Picasso and Michelangelo.
Truman Capote's classic Breakfast at Tiffany's is actually a very short novella. Barely longer than a short story. The classic version also includes 3 actual short stories in the same volume. All four are barely a combined 150 pages.
This reminded me of a collection of Capote stories that included a short story that became In Cold Blood if I remember correctly. All were engaging in the Capote manner. Highly recommend.
I don't think anyone's mentioned comedy/humor short story collections, either fiction or non. Some of my favorite authors:
David Sedaris (The majority of his stories are about his childhood, growing up in the 1970s with 5 sisters. All of his books make me LOL)
Patrick McMahon (Fiction based on his childhood growing up in rural areas of Washington/Idaho. One recurring character is an old hermit who lives in a cabin outside of town that all the kids are afraid of. In the stories his name is Rancid Crabtree.)
SJ Perelman (I read a few of his short story collections and some were hard to follow, but he's the ultimate wordsmith. Recommended reading just for the prose itself.)
Dennis Miller
George Carlin
(their books are mostly extensions of stand-up comedy routines)
