Good economic news for the Birmingham metro area:

http://www.al.com/business/2019/02/b...t-in-2018.html

During 2018 in the 7 county Birmingham metro area, 58 companies announced 4,511 new jobs with a capital investment of $1.026 billion, setting a new record.

No doubt someone is going to point out that compared with other rapidly growing cities, this may not be all that impressive. But considering the economic stagnation that ruled this area for so long, these 2018 figures look pretty good.

You have to learn to walk before you can run.

Good news! What about job losses? According to this, it looks better and I believe this also includes job losses. Not sure why the different numbers but good trend that's for sure.

Interesting. Any theories on the discrepancy?

Is the BBA including all jobs or just those that they recruited/companies that made a job creation announcement? Ie; if Belk at the summit adds a cashier position or if El Barrio adds a waiter position is that captured in the BBA's data?

I would imagine the BBA numbers only include the companies that they recruited and not every job in the region.

Speaking of the BBA, I'm glad that Brian Hilson is moving on. The BBA could be a much stronger organization than it has been in the past. Hopefully they make a good hire for President / CEO.

This is good news. Apparently all of the new hotel development isn’t in vain.

Indeed! I just hope we get more hotel development similar to Redmont, Elyton, and the future Protective Center building and less like the Hilton Parkside development.

This is awesome news! Once you are setting new records you are officially trending in the right direction, I am hopeful that Greater Birmingham continues to follow this path. It is certainly impressive and a sign of things to come for Alabama's biggest city/metro.
