City council tuesday is voting on to approve Avondale (41st St. corridor) to be designated an entertainment district. That would put the city at four along with Uptown, Pepper Place, and Five Points.

The last one will be between Lakeview, Parkside, and 2nd Ave. N district.

Combine Lakeview into the existing Pepper Place zone and make a downtown zone from the BJCC to Parkside, bam done.

A former NFL player is bringing two new food stores to Birmingham this fall.

Dansby Foods is renovating space at 2220 Bessemer Road in the Five Points West neighborhood as well as space at 2173 Highland Ave. S. in the Five Points South area.

The Bessemer Road location will be a 50,000-square-foot full-service grocery store that will also serve as a distribution hub for other Dansby retail outlets in the metro area. The location is taking the place of a Winn Dixie store and will be open around October.

The Highland Avenue location will be a full-service store but will be catered around quick-serve purchases. It’s taking 6,500 square feet and is scheduled to be open at the end of September.

Birmingham native, NFL veteran and former Auburn University linebacker Karlos Dansby is chief executive officer of Dansby Foods, and he has been working with Director of Operations Jeff Gentry since February to get the locations up and running.

Gentry said Dansby is looking into retirement and wants to give back to Birmingham, particularly giving residents in food deserts opportunities to access healthy foods.

The Five Points West location is going to be an upscale, traditional grocery store, Gentry said.

“It’s going to be an upscale grocery store that's going to have all of your ordinary common needs and then as well is a heavy, heavy focus on healthy and local – buying from local farmers and producers,” he said. “We’ll have really good meat departments, really good produce. We’re going try to set ourselves aside and offer items that you might not necessarily be able to find in some of your other stores.”

Roughly 130 employees will work at the western location, and about 10 to 12 will be in Southside.

“The Highland Avenue store is going to have a chef’s table,” Gentry said. “Nice deli, great wine. It'll be more geared towards probably, quick serve. We’re going to have a whole lot, it will be basically like for convenient needs, but it will be a full-service grocery store.”

Hussmann is the general contractor on the project.

So the Highland location is the ground floor of Vesta.

very cool. i'm sure five points west can use more grocery alternatives, and the highland store should help fill the void left by western.
