Torchmark (now Globe Life) is another we lost due to relocation.

didn't regions and amsouth merge? you would think regions would be higher than 446 if both of those were fortune 500s. has regions lost a lot of ground over the years?

We've lost many companies which used to be headquartered in Miami, too. Currently we have 3 Fortune 500 companies (Lennar, World Fuels & Ryder Systems), which when you consider that our metro population is 6.6M, is a poor showing. Instead, we seem to have regional headquarters of major firms as the employment base, along with lots and lots of small businesses. Is this the same for BHam - a sufficient amount of regional headquarters of national/international concerns? I saw the wiki list. If not, could regionals get recruited away from Atlanta, assuming that that is where SE regionals are located?

Birmingham still has 12 or 13 publicly traded companies, but the main strength is in HQs of middle market privately held companies. Plus three of our larger corporate HQs are owned by an outside entity (Alabama Power, Protective Life, BBVA) so they won't show up on a Fortune list, but when combined account for about 10k HQ jobs here.

I dont think Torchmark was ever a Bham company unless it was way way back when.

The Statue of Liberty was removed from their downtown building and relocated to a new tower on a landscaped lawn visible from I-459 near the entrance. The dedication was held on July 4 of that year.

BhamWiki is a treasure trove of info.
