I see some of you hate american cars and would take anything foreign any day over american.

Is there a specific make/model/year you hate? or do you just hate all american cars regardless of who made it and when?

I can agree some of today's foreign cars hold up better than american, but I believe there was once a time 36 years ago when an american car was built to last and foreign car manufacturers were not built very well at all.

I notice on the east and west coasts people drive mostly foreign cars. I'm guessing it's because many people out there are immigrants themselves, and are more familar with foreign cars, perhaps it makes them feel more at home.

American cars look cheap, ugly, and they lose value quickly. If I had to have one it would be an SUV because the cars are just so terrible. Just my opinion, some people love American cars.

Detroit dug it's own grave, ignoring quality, styling, etc while the Japanese and Germans came roaring up on them...too late, Americans were stuck on the imports. Once I went japanese and German, I've never gone back...the only American car I would ever buy would be a Tahoe/SUV of some kind, a Vette, or a Viper-no other domestic appeals to me.

I expect some people to say "because the engine blew in my '73 Nova". It's okay to say you hate American cars if you have actually driven one lately, but to have that opinion based on 30 years ago isn't fair.

hate is such a strong word... i am extremely dissappointed in the american automakers because they took that exact thing for granted, and decided it would be a better business plan to churn out total **** than build something worthwhile again, because they knew (or thought) their customer base was large enough to sustain the garbage run. roger smith actually said this as he stepped down from gee em. thank you for pointing that out, commander obvious.

now two of the big three have made a few strides but haven't caught back up to the competition yet. personally i've been quietly rooting for ford to recover and do something besides the mustang right. not including the foreign based cars (focus, fusion, five hundred thats right five hundred not tore-ass ); personally i think it sucks that all the best american cars are acually foreign designs. wtf?

and even if the big three (er, two) does build some competition crushing models, it's going to take a few years of great products to get this guy's trust back. perfect example is the new malibu - check out patrick bedard's editorial on it in last month's car and driver.

cliff's notes: over the last 20 years it became clear that american car companies have been run by *******s who don't give a crap about cars, only money and stockholders. i don't like to spend money on products owned by *******s who'd rather kiss ass on wall street than build a great car, especially when i love cars and they don't .

Sadly, Deez Nuttz . . . most American car "haters" have absolutely no basis for their hatred.

Over the years I have owned two foreign cars and I will never own another one. Just give me a good old fashioned American vehicle with plenty of cubic inches that will hold up better as well retain value.

There are plenty of ugly (or just plain strange-looking) Euro and Asian cars, too.

And I definitely love American cars!

Thanks for responding.

I think the biggest problem is when people think of "American" cars, they become stereotypical after thinking about one (or more) of these cars:

Breeze
Cavalier
Tempo
Topaz
Escort
Taurus
Dynasty
Lynx
Citation
Ciera
Somerset
Celebrity
Chevette
Neon
Horizon
T-1000

And that's just naming a few. This is probably what they are basing their knowledge off of. And yes I will admit I'm not too fond of those cars either, for I will admit I feel most, if not all listed here are built less than stellar.

But for the american car haters.....if you think all american cars look ugly what do you think of some of the old school american cars (not necessarily the "muscle" cars)....like a plain jane 69 Camaro? Or a 70 Malibu? Or a 67 Le Mans? Or a 68 Mustang? Shoot we can go even bigger.....lets say a 63 Galaxie? Or maybe even a '69 Caprice?

And if you think all american cars are built cheap let me ask do you know what a Chrysler Imperial is? And if so do you know what sport they are usually banned from due to the way they are constructed?

Of course my big question is what is so special about american built SUV's? Shoot I figured even they have left a lot to be desired.

Not sure about any of you folks but to me anything pre 1973 in american cars are good in my book, as they were built with quality in mind.
