The first peoples car was Henry Ford's model T. Up until then , cars were very expensive , only affordable by the wealthy. The massive autos of the day were more than capable of Interstate speeds , yet , there were few places to use them. Our highways we few , mostly dirt trails , and wagon tracks. The model T was best suited for these unimproved environments. Suddenly , a small car , that could serve the masses , became the choice of the less well healed . The rest is history.
The VW was to be the car of the people , much like the Model T , and , with the Autobahn building , there needed to be an affordable car for the German Public. Not everything Hitler did was bad , had that been , he would have not gotten the support of the Public, as he did.

You couldn't pay me enough to drive those underpowered, ugly, stiff-riding, cramped "cars."
What did the ones from the 1950s have? Something like 36 horsepower? Talk about torture! Give me a 375-hp '57 Chrysler 300-C instead!

I'm still the same power craving maniac I was a decade ago but now fiscally responsible in only purchasing sports cars that won't depreciate as fast as they accelerate and eat my wallet out of house and home.
