If the likes of me were running the car companies, they would be building cars people want, not the crap that's collecting dust on the car lots.

Japan-style socialism I can live without. The free market makes the best choices.

Big 3 don't deserve any bail out. They are getting what they deserve for years of design without imagination, years of building uninspired crap cars, years of fat benefits for everyone from executives that come in from cookie companies to barely literate lug-nut tighteners.

Just think how insurance cost could be contained, repairs would be minuscule, or , always under warranty. Your payments would be small , and , you could never get " upside down" in the deprecation of your ride....... Its time for a Peoples car , and , one that works for the masses. Forget about bailing out the car factories every few years , with our tax dollars, lets just put the money into R & D , let them all make it , everything on a even playing field. The population is getting out of control , with more and more cars on the roads that are deteriorating cause there is a lack of funds to fix them. We will put a age limit on your car , then , you turn it in for a new one , and , your old car gets reborn again with recycled materials............Its time for a Peoples car , again........this time on a world scale.......think about it , as there is no where else to go in a shrinking global society , where we all will have to learn to get along with less , ...less money , and , less waste.

The people's car..Like we need another K-car or Pinto ect.....

My taste will never change--luxury versus purely horsepower, no trucks, no old/classic/vintage cars/

Depends on situation more than age. I'm not one to spend huge $$ on a car. When I was younger (and gas cheaper) I had an SUV as I took many weekend trips...and could sleep in it. Now with 40 mile commute each way I got an Accord for reliability and decent mileage.

The Pinto was an early attempt at a " world car" , with parts made all over the place coming together to build an affordable car. There was also the Vega , from GM. These cars were less more than more , and it showed,.
The Peoples car would be different. A lot of cooperative effort would go into it , that coming from Government funding ( as a precondition for bailing out the Auto industries ) , with all auto companies that have earned a right to sell cars in this country contributing . The Federal monies would have oversite protection , with demands directed towards energy conservation , increased fair employment , and safety.
Its going to be a new world out there , we all will have to think differently , if we are to survive as a leader , as well as a consumer. This Country has in the past been great in R & D , its time to take the lead again , with the Peoples car , and , make something in this Country again , instead , of just consuming, and shopping at walmart.

Its most likely that GM will take over Chrysler, with Government help , the deal is all but done. GM will keep the good ( for them ) , and trash all the rest. Chrysler will be history , GM will keep Jeep , the Caravan will be relabeled as a GM product, Dodge trucks will continue , for at lest a while, but all small cars will be gone. Gm will take the 12 million , or is it Billion , that Chrysler has in the bank , bad deals and debts will be discounted or spun off into outer space. I wonder what Mercedes will get , they still have a stake in all this I think......... The perfect time to strike a deal for the Peoples car to get started.

I don't think our country was founded on the government confiscating private property like that. Sounds pretty scary to me.
No , you could do whatever you wanted with your car. There would be incentives however that might make you change your mind.....
Private property ? , the Government takes it every day, nothing new about that !. Did they just take over the Banks ? , thats Socialism , in a big way. Sometimes , its not so bad , and the only way we can have equality as granted by the Founding fathers in the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. .......Don't forget to Vote on Tue......

People's car has been tried, ever hear of Trabant, Zaporozhets, Zhiguli, etc.?

They range from simple and not very satisfying (Zhig) to outright crap (Trabbie).

No thanks!

Most people do not know of these eastern European cars. Russia had the Zil and its forerunner as a result of after the war we sold the Packard dies to them. Sort of looked like a Packard , but , Packard it was not !
The Peoples car would be on a world order , made with the same determination we put towards the war effort. The Planet needs this car , to survive. We just can not keep going the way we are, no amount of" drill baby drill " will give us independence on imported oil. Its time to be proud of this Country again , and , here is the way to do it. The whole world has a love affair with the Automobile , that will not die easy , but , it doesn't have to , WE WILL BUILD THE PEOPLES CAR !! , and , they will like it , buy it , and all the while help make the earth last , a little longer......
