I used to do it every 10K miles back when I was commuting 100+ miles a day because I wanted to get max life out of the tires. I bought one of those lifetime deals at a local chain, so the cost wasn't bad at all.
I'd say the vehicle gets the same amount of alignments as it used to mileage-wise, but since I now only drive maybe 5 miles round-trip a day, it's not nearly as often. Definitely overdue, though, especially since I put on new struts.
Whenever I change tires, IF there is uneven wear. Also whenever I notice pulling or uneven wear.
I used to do it always with new tires, but so many times had to go back because it started pulling after the new "alignment" and the shop would want to sell me other "needed" part and I had to see the manager and explain that all was fine until they messed with it.
And yes, you need it with new struts/suspension parts.
When ever I notice un-even tire ware, replace any major components, or replace the tires. Firestone life time alignment's are a great thing(if you can find a good firestone by you).
I only do an alignment if something about the way the car handles or rides indicates it's needed or if any suspension part that could change the alignment is replaced.
The wheels are balanced every 5k miles when they're rotated for free at discount tire.
When installing new tires as the service is thrown in with the sale.
When installing new steering/suspension parts other than shocks.
