I change the metal one on my Hyundai Tucson everytime I change the oil. I have a friend who works as the parts manager at a Hyundai dealership and gave me about 40 of them. Going at my rate of 2 oil changes a year, I think they'll last for quite a while.
The gaskets on all of my cars were either aluminum or copper. Unless the filter came with one which was rare I didn't replace them. I never had an issue reusing them as long as proper torque was applied.
I replace the metal ones at every oil change. They're like 16 cents from the dealer.
