On the news tonight the NZ Geographic Board are looking at the possibility of renaming the North and South Islands to their Maori names (Te Ika a Maui and Te Wai Pounamu) or them having dual English/Maori names. Apparently North & South Island names have ever been 'officialised'.

Any thoughts?

Seems to me the Maori got there and named the place first so they have first choice.

Maybe. But why should the NZ goverment (NZ tax payer) have to pickup the tab for a treaty that was signed by England, Surely the English tax payer should pay to fix up their mess. instead the NZ goverment is paying 100s of millions of dollars to a minority that claim rights given to them by England. Afterall with the current exchange rate it would be a cheap fix.

Well it's time for that Waitangi tribunal to end and it's time to move on to the future. It's got to the point any decent piece of real estate in NZ, the Maori turn up and say hey that's a sacred place, now give me money.

They've bent the white guilt liberals over the barrel enough so it's time to end it.

my suggestion...South Island and Even Further South Island...All depends on perspective...

Here in the US, we have many places using American Indian names...But its the name that the settlers used 100-200 years ago. Seems PC to the extreme to change the names now. Perhaps they could offer optional altas...English or Maori???

Is there nothing else of real concern in NZ? Economy and employment all spiffy, is it? And housing affordable, taxes low, no homeless, no waiting lists in hospitals? What will changing names really do, in the whole big scheme of things? Besides, isn't Maui already taken?

Keep the names as it is. I wouldn't bother trying to pronounce Maori words as it's too damn hard.
