In rugby, football/soccer and most other sports bith Australia and South Africa has gold & green on their uniforms. (SA has more green and Oz more gold). What is the story behind this?

I think it's something to do with the national plant, wattle.

I think South Africa's gold is from the stuff they mine out of the ground and the green represents the land, just like the flag
