Here's a funny Question...Does Hutto have tornado sirens ??? We came down from Kansas city which of course has tornado sirens every were, But we've noticed the towns in north Austin seem to be at a higher risk for severe weather. We are severe weather people and totally enjoy massive storms So we are thinking of possibly moving up to the north of Austin.
In Austin it seems some towns have the sirens other towns don't.

I don't know about Hutto, but we've recently moved to Taylor from central Illinois (with a stop in Austin), where the tornado sirens are tested on the first Tuesday of every month at 10 am, and where said sirens are frequently used.

In the 8 months that I lived in Austin, I heard nary a siren and don't know if they have any.

But since we've moved to Taylor, we have experienced severe weather and on one dark and stormy night, the telephone rang, and it was a computerized message from the City of Taylor, telling all citizens of a tornado warning in effect until a particular time, in response to a funnel cloud sighting somewhere else nearby.

This was the 2nd time I got a phone call from the computerized voice of the City of Taylor--they also called each residential and commercial number in the phone book to tell of a boil order and its later lifting.

So, a phone call, for those with phone service, is better than a siren!

Nope, no sirens out here, but the news is really good about quick updates and they will cut in on almost any channel except paid cable (HBO, etc...). We didn't get a phone message out here either, but Taylor is bigger than Hutto so that may be why, but this would be a great point for me to bring up to City Council.

That last storm that blew through here was really creepy. We saw at least 3 funnels trying to form over our neighborhood as it was blowing over. The little funnels would come down and go back up and thank heavens none got down all the way to the ground I would also not mind if they put up sirens. When we lived in Aurora, Colorado they had them and I heard them go off once during a really ugly storm. It was one of the most Orwellian things I've ever heard, but I was thankful for the very audible public service message with instructions that it played.

But just for the record, I've been here 3 years and never experienced a tornado. My sister has been here around 10 yrs. and not experienced one here yet either. It's more likely to happen more North of us.

I have been in Central Texas over 40 years and never experienced (first hand) a tornado. We are at the southern end of the torndo alley, and the ones that form don't tend to either reach the ground or stay there long.

heheh yeah I looked at some tornado statistics for Texas and it seems like not many really touch down around Austin,,,The scary thing is the ones that do touch down kill alot more people on average because lack of sirens, and/or people have no place to go. We think we are going to start looking up in the Hutto area, but for sure we are going to have a storm closest installed hehe better safe then sorry.

We have more of a problem with straight line winds. You get downed trees, power lines and ripped up roofs.
