Ever since KGSR changed frequencies, I've notice that it's changed from a true alternative from the mainstream to an adult-contemporary lite hits station. Instead of Stevie Ray Vaughn, Gary P Nunn, Spoon and Wilco I'm hearing Natalie Merchant, Duncan Sheik and Everlast (??).

Is there any other good alternative out there, or do you think there will be soon? This is a very sad development.

I know what you're saying, and it's a sad development. The fact is that KGSR doesn't pull in the ratings that it needs to survive in an expanding market like Austin. They still play a lot of what made it great, but they are mixing in some weird adult contemporary light hits garbage. I see the whole channel fading away and popping back up in some form on public radio, such as KEXP in Seattle or KCRW in Los Angeles. Austin has unfortunately become too big and watered down for such a cool commercial station to exist. Satellite radio is also hurting niche channels such as KGSR.

Jody Denberg left as content manager at the station. Since then every time I turn on KGSR I have heard the Cars and Sinead O'connor and far less Van Morrison. The reception on the new frequency is worse for me as well.

I wonder if Jody Denberg's "retirement" was really just the result of something else going on behind the scenes that he wasn't happy with. He was really dedicated to his job and the Austin music scene, and his departure sure seemed rather sudden to my husband and I.

if you listened to his last set you'd be hard pressed to believe the reason was anything other than being forced to adjust format -- he was with the station from the beginning and a national figure in the music business -- he will continue his life's work with music in another form but will be missed -- i just hope they will put the last afternoon on cd and market it -- i'd pay for it!

Roy, do you know where that playlist might be (and what date/time slot it was)?

KGSR's new signal totally sucks at my house, and often in the car, so I haven't even heard the format changes...!
