A lot of interesting replies here, got me really excited for Austin, TX.

Again, I'm not planning on majoring in Philosophy, I am just hoping for some people to converse with or maybe join a meet up group.

As for music, I enjoy many styles including some metal, some punk, prog, jazz, funk, etc etc. As far as electronic music goes, I enjoy it on a different level for different moods. I'm not into ****ty 4/4 house, traditional techno, HHC, hardcore, or similar repetitive crap. I like break, dub, psytrance, dnb and some others. I don't really expect Austin to cater to all of this, I'm just curious.

Whatever you do, don't listen to anything Leonhardt has to tell you. He's a Phoenix transplant on these boards with a particular dislike of Austin for no particular reason.

There DOES seem to be a lack of good 80s/New Wave music here, unfortunately. You can find electronic music, but you have to look. I will say that guitar-based pop seems to the the main focus in Austin. i.e. walk into most clubs, and that's what you'll hear. But there are all kinds of different musics being played here if you look for them.

I'm not going to go through all of your questions, but based on them, it sounds like you'd like Austin very much.

You might want to try the Austin Philosophy Discussion Meetup Group or check out the Unitarian Church to find fellow philosophers, when you get here.

There used to be a group of Johnnie's (St. John's College graduates) here in Austin who had readings and seminar once a month, but last I heard about them was a while back and I don't know if they still exist.
