I'm an aspiring comic-book writer who is writing a story about a Guardian Angels-like organization (with a superhero approach) in Texas. Originally, I was going to set the story in Waco, TX due to its high crime but opted to use Austin as a setting (since Waco is not a big city and lacks culture) because of the "Keep Austin Weird" campaign. Therefore, I have a few questions to ask:

Does Austin have any socio-economic and racial problems? If so, please describe in vivid detail.
Are there any gangs in Austin?
What crimes are prevalent in Austin?
What are the highest rated crimes in Austin?
What neighborhoods in Austin is bad?
How are minorities' relationship with Austin PD after the shooting of Kevin Brown?
What slang do Austinites use?

I would be very grateful for your help. Please reply A.S.A.P. Thanks for reading!!!

I would think such a story would best be placed in the setting of a gritty metropolis, which Austin is not.

We have some social strife in Austin related to the relationship between police and the fact that they don't say "pretty please" when arresting criminals who flee, have guns, or try to run them over in cars. But I believe most of that is manufactured by the news media (Austin Statesman mainly) and well meaning but misguided minority advocacy groups.

What areas in Texas would fit a gritty metropolis?

Dallas or Houston...but since you're so close to the southside of Dallas, you could easily drive there for research, accurate drawings, etc.

Why Dallas or Houston? I suggest Gary, Indiana or Detroit, MI. You wanna be a gangsta - go there.

Yeah, I agree with the others: Austin's not a gritty place to set your noir comic book. If you wanted to write a mystery about who didn't pick up their dog droppings at the dog park, or which city council member secretly doesn't drive a Prius, or who printed some phony ACL wristbands, you might be on to something. Otherwise, you'll have to look elsewhere.

As far as prevalent crimes: I heard that last weekend someone's buzz got killed.

Why not Austin? It might not be gritty, but hey, it's the comics.

Are there any gangs in Austin? Don't know, but I do see tagging now and again.

What crimes are prevalent in Austin? Not too sure but I witnessed a cop questioning two pre-teens because they were dragging a cat on a leash.

What are the highest rated crimes in Austin? Highest rated crimes and misdemeanors? We haven't developed at rating system for top crimes yet. There aren't enough to rate perhaps?

What neighborhoods in Austin is bad? Depends on your POV. There are a few on this forum who think the suburbs are bad. Too cookie cutter. Baaaad.

I'm being silly. But I think the idea of an Austin-based comic series could be really fun. Think Leslie.

Leslie as a super hero ... hmmmm....by God, it just might work! He's an advocate for the homeless, former Mayoral candidate, and local icon. There could be some rich material there. What would is super-crossdresser-hero super power be? It would have to be some sort of majic power related to his thong, right?

I've got to agree with that -- who cares about accuracy, it's fantasy -- and Austin has plenty of "fantasy" traits known throughout the country. You could use all the Texas stereotypes, plus the Austin ones: Besides just Leslie, how about our huge population of drug-crazed zombie hippies? Corrupt politicians? Evil Texas businessmen who control everything, environmentalist heroes who save our salamanders.

Make up the gangs, the crimes, and the bad neighborhoods as you see fit. Make sure storylines incorporate music and bands, that will prove you've done your research.
