I'm 24 years old and have a girlfriend/fiance and we're looking to move out that way in mid to late summer. I have friends that go to ACC and family in San Antonio and have visited many times and love it in Austin. I'm applying for Graduate school at UT for the 2008-9 year. The budget I'm working with is as cheap as possible up to about 700-800 a month, I'm willing to go up a little higher if the place is great. I'm looking for either a decent apartment in the south/central area(withing biking or walking distance to downtown/short bus trip) or a house on the outskirts of town or in a neighborhood not insanely far from the city. My G/F and I will be sharing a car and we want to be able to get places without it as much as possible. My good friend lives off Manor Rd. east of I-35, but I don't really like that area, besides, he's paying way too much for his two bedroom(I only want a 1). No way I'm going to RR or P-Ville. Any help/suggestions/apartment complexes/neighborhoods?

I would check out the neighborhoods just south of downtown. Sharing a car shouldn't be a problem cause you can walk or take the bus. Another member here, jread, used to live in Timbercreek apartments and he loved it there. Google that to see where it's located and then you can go from there. You can search statesman.com classifieds, craigslist, or use an apartment locator. They're free.

Hope that helps.

Default moving to the city

I moved here in Jan to start a new real estate career, so I have seen the expensive housing. I don't sell rentals, but did an extreme amount of research because I will rent until I find something affordable. I found many places on rent. net. The Apt. complex that I liked the best and was the least expensive was off of spyglass called the windsor on spyglass. It is right on the greenbelt. It might be to far from campus for you. It's near zilker park. My second choice was the woods at barton skyway. However they told me it was on the greenbelt. YOu can see the greenbelt, but it is death trap to get to the greenbelt from those apartments. Anyway, I hope this helps.

Are you open to co-op housing?
I had several friends who lived in Opsis during grad school. It's an apartment-style co-op. Not luxurious by any means, but cheap and walking distance to campus.
