What's the best Chicken Fried Steak in Austin? I'm on a life-long quest to find the world's best.

It's not here. Hoovers does a credible one as does Hills. People will tell you Threadgills is good. They are wrong.

It is in Liberty Hill but Dahlia Cafe makes probably the best I have had around here. I drive out there from Round Rock every now and then.

My wife grew up in south Austin. She says we should try Hill's. I agree about Threadgill's.

Tender, easy to cut, the breading doesn't come off when you cut it, and a generous amount of cream gravy.

My wife and I love jack allens kitche both in RR and 71 area, I ask for the gravy on the side and pour on little by little to maintain crunch. The batter has flavor and gravy is jalapeno! (not spicy, but has legit flavor!).

Alas, the hipsterization of Austin has tossed CFS on the trash heap. Gone, but not forgotten, are the penultimate CFSs of The Stallion (N Lamar, just S of Koenig) and Virginia's (S First, where Torchy's is now). No demand, no appreciation.

That said, reasonable approximations of the previous excellence can be found at the Dart Bowl Steakhouse and the previously mentioned Hoover's - no surprise since Hoover Alexander was trained by Harry Akin, founder of the Night Hawk Steakhouse. Don't make the mistake of thinking the Frisco Shop carries on the Night Hawk CFS excellence.

Other choices are the Bluebonnet Cafe in Marble Falls - un hipsterized territory if there ever was. Also, surprisingly good at Luby's. Avoid Threadgills.

Yes, Luby's CFS is pretty good. So is the one served at IHOP on the breakfast menu.
