Haven't had Chicken Fried Steak in many years since I learned it came in a Chicken version.
Forgot about Waterloo's - yes, they're pretty decent.
The Waterloo Ice House at Avery Ranch changed into The Blue Bayou, or something like that. A friend said it's basically the same menu.

Jim's Chicken Fried steak is better then either Hill's, Threadgill's and Waterloo's.

I second ScoPro's mention of Chilis. I was very surprised how good theirs was. And their mashed potatoes are more natural than most.

Threadgills sucks all around. It's cred is completely undeserved.

Koppe Bridge in College Station is very good. I know - not Austin.

I like my CFS with salad & fries. I hate when they serve it with veggies, beans, cole slaw, etc. Just a personal preference. I like veggies, just not with CFS.

My late daughter-in-law (a vegan) was a server, bartender, & shift manager there (and at Chuy's) for many years before she passed away in April.

I've heard from others that 290 Cafe in Manor serves a good one. (need to try it).

Liked the Stallion & would eat (for the price) the one at GM Steakhouse. Best I ever had was at Ma Goodson's in Tomball. (The original shack in Huffsmith was a 10...Ma would yell from the kitchen asking if you needed more gravy, the current location still offers a solid 8).

Will Travel 4 Food: Goodson's Cafe

The CFS is one of many great entrees served at the fabulous Hotel Blessing Cafe (I think on Sundays and at lunch during the week it's on a buffet...but maybe it was a pan fried CFS?). Those are the two best I've had but it's been 2-3 years since I've traveled to either.

Hotel Blessing Coffee Shop - Blessing, Texas

I love the fact that this thread is on the same page as the "just how vegan is Austin" thread.

That's a great description--and is very hard to come by in most places.

I've had CFS that you could cut with a fork--and others that were akin to eating the bottom of a shoe.

Jim's anything is excellent. They have a niche and they execute it to perfection. The professionalism of their waitstaff is a joy to behold.

Half the hipster faves in town would improve by 100% if they were 1/4 as good as Jim's.
