No $hit. Let me be the food editor and I will tell you that a damn decent CFS is at either Cat Fish Parlor. It's kind of sad since I remember the CFS at the Nighthawk. I suspect its healthy living folks and a change in tastes.

So I am really, really stingy about giving away my local favorites in South Austin but for a very good CFS or CFC, try the Bakehouse just North of Stassney on Manchaca. It's located between a Laundromat and Strange Brew. It's a clean, dated place. They have their own bakery. I've been eating there for 20 years, so again, my bias comes into play.

This discussion makes me wish for The Black Eyed Pea. I ate a lot of their CFS and paid a lot of bar tabs at the restaurant when it was on South Lamar.

RE Hoovers: I was not impressed. But, I'll preface by saying staff was having a sucky day. I need to try it again.

Give them a try, their peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream makes for a great finish after the Chicken Fried Steak!

Really makes me wish for Good Eats. Let the newcomers guess where that was and what's there today. And what Austin restauranteur was in charge of the kitchen there. Great CFS.

It's amazing how lengthy a thread about a mere entrée can be. Americans...

Son, that's your mistake. We are talking about 1/3 of the Texas food trinity. This is nothing compared to how worked up we can get over barbecue.

Nice explanation of how to make one.

Had the CFS at Luby's Lake Creek today. NO gravy...turned out to be a bad move. Without gravy, the CFS was seriously underseasoned...tasted like chicken. Heck, next time I'll go for the gravy and the extra fat, flour and calories . Black eyed peas were tasty, as were the green beans. Sweet tea was actually sweet for two of the three glasses I had.

I miss Good Eats. My husband and daughter used to hike there down the green belt from our house near Ben White of a Saturday morning, and I'd meet them there and we'd eat nummy food.

Was a sad day in Austin when they closed.
