We are looking to move to Round Rock ,because it is family friendly. My husband owns his own trucking company and my daughter is a prospective pianist. She is bi- racial ( I am German ,my husband is African American) and we have had a terrible experiences in St.Louis.

Anyone know which community is open minded about other cultures?

Thought I'd answer your question. I'm multiracial myself, and my husband is Mexican-American, so we are a multiethinical/multiracial household. I live in Round Rock now, and before that Pflugerville. You won't go wrong with either area. There's enough diversity in the Austin area that seeing a biracial child isn't that big of a deal. I feel better about race relations here than I've ever felt elsewhere. You also have to keep an open mind and don't get too caught in desiring diversity for diversity's sake. Remember that just because an area is predominately white doesn't mean that the people are close-minded. For example, my neighborhood is probably 85-90% White. We're the only household of color on the block. But that doesn't really matter. People have been very friendly, bringing us gifts of brownies and cookies and are overall very pleasant. My daughter has made several friends. I'm still amazed by the warmth of the people. I've found that people just desire to live around pleasant people period.

I really think you'll fare better here than in St. Louis. If you let me know your budget, I can give you a list of areas that I think are good. you might also check out Pflugerville, too. It is also family friendly and has a number of good neighborhoods.

Do beware of the property taxes in Williamson County. They are among the highest in the nation

Also, electric rates are quite high!

I agree. The post doesn't say anything.....high compared to what? & a "rate" isn't a dollar amount.

A 2.5% (property tax) rate (which might be perceived as "high" to many) on 200K will result in a MUCH lower tax bill than a (property) tax bill of say 1.75% on 1.2M.

& I would suggest electric bill rates in Wilco & all of greater Austin are fairly normal.....but in the summer our electric bills are high. (if the AC is cranked)

& the poster has 7K reps.

I agree with riaelise.

Round Rock & Pville (& fwiw, 80% of greater Austin) will be family friendly & color blind.

The more important question (at this point) is what is your rental or home purchase budget and where will your husband be driving every day. Or will he open up an office near your home?

Budget & Commute. Commute & Budget. (& why Austin?, why not Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, etc.?)

The average property tax in Williamson County is $3,858. Here are a few others from around the country:

Santa Clara, CA -- $4,868
Marin, CA -- $5,718
Waukesha, WI -- $4,053
Lake, IL -- $6,570
DuPage, IL -- $5,771
Will, IL -- $5,191
Duchess, NY -- $5,220
Suffolk, NY -- $7,600
Sussex, NJ -- $6,331
Bucks, PA -- $4,256
Fairfield, CT -- $6,498
Rockingham, NH -- $5,594
Middlesex, MA -- $4,506
Fairfax, VA -- $4,645

So, no -- nowhere near "the highest in the nation"
