When shopping at my local Corpus Christi HEB, I requested a paper bag. The cashier snarkily told me that I was lucky that she had them and that they would be be discontinuing the use of plastic bags because of the cost. She asked me if I was paying attention to the news and said that Austin HEB already requires customers to bring their own bags. Is this true?

All single-ply, single use bags are banned in Austin (and Brownville and at least one other TX city).

You can pat a flat $1 fee per transaction and HEB will bag the groceries for you in the old plastic bags. They have this in place for one year. Sure, they are rude about it but I could care less.

Wow..rude because you paid $1 for bags that used to be free ?
I'd say something to the manager. There's no cause for being rude because of this bag ban.
It takes time for people to change habits they've had for years, if not decades.

I have yet to run into anyone rude at all. I think people get defensive and see rudeness where they want to.....

Is it something that the City of Austin requires? So, it's not ONLY HEBs, but all grocery stores?

Pretty much all stores, not just grocery (e.g. Target, Macy's, etc, etc). I took a clothing item back to Macy's that was purchased pre-ban (feels almost like talking about assault weapons or smoking) and I returned it in the bag. After getting credit for it, the sales clerk actually asked me if I wanted to keep the bag. We joked about how valuable the bags themselves are now

It's pretty much all stores. Home Depot/Lowes, Walmart, convenience stores, etc., are covered by the city rule. You hardly notice it at the other stores (IMO) because you usually don't have a huge number of items like a grocery store. Even so, with all the conditioning to bring reusable bags to the grocery store, it will be a long time before I remember to bring them in to the hardware store

I shopped at the Pflugerville HEB on 1825 today and they are doing the "no bag" thing. When I questioned it - since I thought it was only an Austin thing, apparently someone in charge feels that store is in "Austin" - which is why they are doing it? WTH?

Luckily all that I bought today fit into two bags - the white one they gave me for free, and then I bought one of those $1 green ones they carry.

I mostly shop at the HEB in Round Rock, but happened to be in Pflugerville today. I'll stick to my RR store from now on.
