What are the alternatives to HEB and Central Market in S. Austin? I am looking for places to pick up ethnic foods, fuits and vegtables, meats, etc on the cheap. Are there farmers markets or good Mexican groceries? What about Meijers? Any place else I should check out? I'll be living off Lamar in 78735.

Sunset Valley Farmer's Market every Saturday morning.

Also, I've not been to this one, but there's evidently a Fiesta at 5510 South IH35.

Also, very small, but there's Phoenicia on South Lamar.

Sun Harvest at Lamar and Ben White (Brodie Oaks shopping center)... meats and produce are cheap (and good) there, but packaged stuff is more expensive. I find it to be a good alternative to HEB, especially the one at Brodie and Wm Cannon... that place is a madhouse.

In the coming months, you'll have Sprouts locations on Brodie and in Rollingwood to choose from... I understand they are reasonably priced, too.

Worth the trip to Fiesta without a doubt for cheap ethnic produce.

No Meijers here. Definitely check out Fiesta. As others have mentioned, Newflower and Sun Harvest are both great for cheaper produce. There is a Farmer's Market on Saturdays that sets up in the Tony Burger parking lot on the frontage road of 290/71 between Brodie and Westlake. And soon you will have Sprouts as well!

I went to the Natural Grocer (?) on Guadalupe this weekend. Amazing selection of vitamins, herbs and homeopathic things, good stock of organic and natural foods. Price is so-so, but selection terrific. Only frozen (organic) meat.
