My Mother, still driving in her 80's--one day may not survive a 3 minute trip to the store.

I have inquired about this and not at all pleased with the response.

I know that the fire dept on Clairmont has difficulty getting around in this area. Truly a hazard of the highest order to Public Safety.

Not something to be ignored.

your mother is right to fear traffic
I know! I'm accustomed to traffic myself (as one might eventually grow accustomed to chronic pain), but it is a major factor in finding a place where my aging parents will be safe, comfortable and independent -- yet still within my reach if they should need me.

For the most part where I live I feel safe. Though now I am not feeling so safe after dark at my local stores I go to. We have had random drive by shootings at houses, stores, and cars. And this is in Dawsonville!! It is happening at night at the main intersection of 400 & Hwy 53. An intersection and area my husband works and drives in when he comes home every night at 11pm. At home I am ok. Though I wouldn't leave anything unlocked at night or even during the day actually. At least not anymore.

I find it very funny that people say they feel safe and then go on to describe the type and how many dogs they have as well as security systems and gates. I would feel safe too with Fort Knox!!

BTW, as a former long time Dekalb county resident, I can say with certainty that there is no amount of money in this world that would make me live there again. It used to be nice, but has turned into a corrupt crime ridden area. Maybe not all of it, but the parts I could afford and are familiar with are!!

And don't get me started on the traffic...

Absolutely. I feel just as safe in the area within our Mableton subdivision as I did back in Minnetonka MN growing up, and somewhat safer than I did when I lived in east Bloomington, MN by the Mall of America.

Yes.

Thumbs down my area is not crime ridden

I heard about the incident(s) in/around Dawsonville. strange and terrible --anywhere

I visited Dawsonville prior to the recent holiday season. Looks like it is developing nicely. Not really enough places to eat--that I could find--I know I wouldn't enjoy driving to Cumming to shop. A whirlwind --spontaneous tour--I really didn't see much of the city. 'Far away'--on the way to Dahlonega. May be a quick trip to some --but it is a long way to me.

My little 'province' of DeKalb is safe enough. Throughout the transition of the past decade many people would say--'Oh, you live so close to Chamblee--International Corridor...' and shake their heads. There were never any problems really --for my area. 'On the other side of I85' toward Decatur.

Things are getting ready to Boom--that is not my idea of Great news but--I have seen the signs for several years. Everyone who lives in this area wants 'Prosperity'--LOL---mesmerized by the Talkmaster. IYKWIM?

The traffic is intolerable. Last fall a man was actually killed while mowing his yard on Clairmont. Van careened into a telephone pole and killed him.

I can only wonder why there was no 'Moral Outrage'. I know it is nothing to anyone but me--but a van struck and killed my dog this past October in front of my house. Driver on a cell phone. I stopped to tie my shoe and my dog dashed toward the street. I screamed at her--she just drove off.

I don't consider this a good quality of life. <shrug> 'That is how it is..'
Very much desired area now--Intown. Prices increasing--not really so great, jmo.

I don't mean to offend anyone--I have lived here for many decades and have watched the area grow and change. Not overly impressed with any area--it's my home--Atlanta, GA. Has its problems --could do better in some areas.

My relatives live in Gwinnett. Always said that Atlanta was a den of iniquity--etc--Too big and too much $$$ and what was the big deal? LOL.

Almost anywhere you go in the South--there are 'Feelings' about Atlanta. It is a city--a pretty good one. Far from perfect.

I just hope I don't 'Have' to move elsewhere because my neighborhood becomes too expensive.

I feel safe in my community. I can walk around at night, I can leave my door unlocked one day in a hurry and not worry all day about someone breaking in. I live in Cobb County and feel safe in just about every part. I wouldn't go into some parts of the Marietta(city limits) at night. I hate going into SE Atlanta, not because I am fearful, the people really don't bother you, I just get tired of seeing urban decay, crack houses, and prositutes with no police officers for miles. It was just so depressing when you think of the kids who grow up in such an environment because of their parent's mistakes. There is such a shortage of officers in Southeast Atlanta which pisses me off since there seems to be one every couple of blocks in the cozy affluent part of Cobb I live in. We don't need them harrasing us! ATLANTA needs to invest more money in ensuring that the city is safe and those kids have a way to escape. I started a tutoring program for the kids in Southeast Atlanta because I beleive a better education than the inner city provides is the key to exiting that hell. PM me gus if anyone is interested in volunteering.

Default Funny that you mentioned Dekalb

I was driving around in South Dekalb Saturday doing a little "sightseeing" aka I got lost. The area looked a lot safer than it did when I was last down there in '03. I know looks can be decieving but it did. Question: What are considered the "good" and "bad" areas of S. Dekalb these days?
