Ok, I've narrowed my apartment search to Decatur and the surrounding area. As much as I would love to live in the Decatur city limits, right now I don't think it would be economically feasible. So, I'm considering the areas around the city that are also named Decatur. Are there any certain communities I should avoid moving to because of crime, safety, lousy schools, etc.? Areas where I can let my kids play outside or take a nice stroll and not get hit by random gunfire? Also, I'm trying not to get too far away from MARTA, so the area would need to have reliable public transportation. Any suggestions?

Look in Oakhurst, East Atlanta. Also, northeast of Emory's campus, along Clairmont, is the Medlock Park neighborhood. It's part of Decatur but not the city but still a good area.

Good luck!

The area from Decatur/Emory, North Decatur Rd/Clairmont to Tucker/Northlake is worth considering.

After you leave Decatur, the city of, the MARTA train stations are few and far between. Headed north the next train stations would be Brookhaven, Chamblee, Doraville. The buses run frequently through this area during rush hours and somewhat less dependably during the rest of the day.

It really is difficult to completely rely on public transportation.

I'm not going to completely rely on public transportation, but I still need this option available. With the cost of gas getting higher and higher, I'm looking for ways to cut down on expenses, and public transportation is also great for the environment.
