You are a real Atlantan.

The timing of that rain was really, really unfortunate. Not only can rain dampen the mood of outdoor activities, it can turn fields into mudpits.

Oh well. It's grass. It'll grow back. We still have a few more weeks of reasonably warm weather.

No way to predict in advance about rain during events. I thought the grass overall actually held up pretty well on Saturday.

I'm pretty certain the MM organizers had to pay a grass bond to replace any damaged grass.

That is basically every festival at Piedmont where alchohol is available.... and part of the disadvantage for living adjacent to one of the cities most enjoyable resources.

Honestly, I am not sure why the city/conservancy allowed them to move music midtown back into the area. If they are smart, they will force them to move it back to the Civic center as it had to in years past when their green space (now the federal reserve) was snatched up and the concert festival had grown too big.

As for midtown not being desireable in 1996... that is not what I remember. I was a college student at Tech then and I remember midtown being a good area to buy a house in if you could afford it. This was waaaaay before the high rises and before the Vortex moved back on to Peachtree and when the biltmore was boarded up and abandoned.

Informative article in this subject, first page of today's AJC Metro section. Sorry - no link. I read it in the paper version.

MM does not pay to use the park. The city runs MM and owns the park. The conservancy doesn't gain any profit from MM. Sure the city will pay for some of the damage but the conservancy will have to fix most of it. It's really sad to see such an amazing park destoryed.

This is why MM should move back to the Civic Center!

Its grass, it'll grow back. The Road Race did far more damage. They'll rope off the areas to allow the grass to take root and next spring everything will be back to normal. events like this bring in lots of money for the city, local vendors, and restaurants around the area. Part of the allure of MM is having the skyline as a back drop to the festival.

I find the people complaining about events being held at Piedmont Park to be comical. On average, how many MAJOR events are held at the park? 8-10 a year? I'm talking everything from the PRR to MM to Dogwood to the Red Bull soapbox races. I'm not counting events like concerts at Park Tavern, softball games, tennis, etc. To hear some people talk, there is a never ending stream of major events every weekend. But even if that was the case, what's the point of having a wide open green space in the middle of the city if you can't use it for these kinds of events?

The grass in the park will be fine. The trash will get picked up. The mud will dry. When its time for the next major event, the park will show little to no signs that MM was ever even there. Nothing that was done is irreparable.

As for the surrounding neighborhood, this is part of what you have to deal with. Growing up in New Orleans, we owned a condo in the French Quarter one block off Bourbon St. We stayed there a lot & you knew that you were always going to have to deal with the drunken spillover. In the end, the luxury of living in the heart of the action & being so close to so much fun stuff far outweighs the occasional inconvenience of a drunk kid pissing in your bushes, beer cans in your front lawn, or concert noise after 11PM.

Oh for god's sake, the park was not destroyed. It incurred some minor, easily fixed damage to the grass. Big deal.
