We are planning to move to Peachtree City in a couple of months, so I'm interested in what traffic is like out of Peachtree City in the morning.

We are looking at two houses--One actually is in the extreme western part of Fayetteville off of Hwy 54. The other is in Peachtree City proper near lake Peachtree about about two miles west of the one we're looking at in Fayetteville.

What is traffic like on Hwy 54 in the mornings? I leave for work most days no later than 6:30--most of the time by 6:15.

I'm wondering if we should focus on getting a place that is off of Hwy 74 instead, but if traffic is manageable, I like the two houses we're focusing on.

Traffic within Peachtree City will not be your issue. The two issues will be (1) the interchange of Highway 74 with I-85 and (2) the Downtown Connector (75/85) going into the city.

Regarding (1), this will probably a headache that will hold you up for about five minutes. If you want this truck-clogged nightmare of a diamond interchange replaced with a proper cloverleaf interchange, vote yes on the transportation referendum in 2012.

Regarding (2), there's basically no way to get around this, but if you are in fact going to downtown itself, you might have the option of getting off the interstate before you cross I-20 and driving on surface streets from there. The connector is worst after you get north of I-20. Around 7AM it shouldn't be that bad, though--probably 5-10 minute delay on average, maybe less.

I agree - traffic out of PTC flows pretty easily up 74 and isn't bad until you get up near 85. At that time of morning it isn't that bad - it gets noticeably worse (not unbearable, just worse) if you will be leaving your house after 7AM. I've been doing the commute from PTC to Vinings for a few months (about 40 minutes if I keep up with the traffic flow >70MPH), so I can't speak to the rest of the commute into downtown after the 85/285 split.

I really love the area - it is a beautiful city and I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I have.

Yes to the bolded. 74 is so much closer in to the expressway. It is one thing to drive 20 miles on the hwy and 5 miles to get to the hwy v. 15 miles of street driving just to get to the hwy. My humble opinion.
