You know, in 45 years of living here in the desert, I've run across 2 scorpions, 1 rattlesnake, no tarantulas, no brown recluses, 1000+ lizards, 2 frogs, 1 turtle, 6 javelina, 4 coyotes, 12 roadrunners, 500+ humming birds, 1000+ pigeons, 4 swans, 2 ducks, 1 Jackalope, and over 1 million crazy drivers.
So the odds are in my favor if I can just stay off the roads.

LOL. Driving is one of the things we're looking forward to out there. From our last trip, we were so amazed by how well traffic flowed in Las Vegas and the surrounding areas. People seemed to actually understand the rulesof the road which was amazing to us, being from Memphis (the number one WORST city of drivers in the nation). Also, on the desert highways, we didnt run into anyone who was doing anything all that crazy-whereas in our area (rural Tn), even on these winding two lane roads people will weave in and out regardless of the double yellow lines. It's so rediculous. My husband is buying a motorcycle this month and I'm going to be so much more nervous thinking about him riding it around here...at least out there it seems alot more likely that you could avoid an accident.

I am so excited about that. he he I want snow for awhile. I'm sick of the hot. From what I hear RI isn't that cold anyway. Not like the North. You know, bugs love the heat too! LOL

Me too! I spent a month driving around Arizona, a different town almost daily. There were a couple of areas in AZ where I didn't like driving (downtown Phoenix and Tucson), but overall I ran into far fewer crazy drivers there than I do on the back roads of rural TN.

Yep. Here in rural TN the rule of the road is "biggest goes first and can do whatever they want". If you're stopped at a 4-way stop sign in a car, and there's a pickup truck coming from another direction, you may as well wait, because they don't believe stop signs apply to them and they'll run it no matter who has right of way. And if you're following the rules of the road and the other guy isn't and he almost causes an accident by running a stop sign or light, he'll be the one cussing you out for being in his way. It's nuts.

When the nearest town's only 4-way intersection got traffic lights to replace the stop signs 3 or 4 years ago, these people had no idea what to do. They were stopping on green and running red lights. It's as if they had never seen a traffic light before. They probably hadn't, since many of the locals here have never ventured out further than their own town.

The funniest thing was not understanding turning on green after yielding. The first few months after getting the light, it was hilarious reading the letters to the editor section of the paper, where people were complaining that the traffic lights weren't working right, because people from the opposite direction had "green turn lights" at the same time the writer had a green in in the opposite direction. Well it wasn't a "turn" light, it was simply a regular green in both directions with turning allowed on green after yielding to oncoming traffic. They didn't get that concept at all.

I can so relate. I've had so many close calls going around curves with someone coming head-on at me in my lane. Not even passing someone, just driving on the wrong side of the road. We have some crazy drivers out here.

Logging trucks are CRAZY around here too. I am afraid to be behind one...they never use their turn signals and they speed!

Alice,
Are you planning on moving to Las Vegas area or AZ area?
We live in Knoxville and are going to move to north east AZ area to work as missionaries. I love it out there and I have lived in E. TN my whole life.
