Even though the snowbirds' main objective is to escape the subarctic temperatures of their homes up north, I do not believe they will go to a terrible place just to meet that objective.

So, what else is it that makes it so bad? Well... perhaps it is not so easy to put it words? Everyone will feel differently about different environments. I hate it here in Florida, but there are others that LOVE it. I hated it in Cleveland, Ohio; but, I have many friends and family that won't leave the place. So, I guess it's all up to the individual. However, these kinds of forums are good to get an idea of what some major concerns are about certain areas. They are also good to learn about nice things... and to find out where the ideal neighborhoods and schools are.

BTW, I do plan on renting before buying. But, that is just so I have time to find an ideal neighborhood on my own.

come here and you'll see what we are talking about. come in mid august to get the full effect of the summer and come in january to get the full effect of the snowbirds. other things that are wrong with yuma, there is nothing and i mean nothing for the kids here, i have 3. there is no good nightlife here, no good resturants here, its not that cheap. the college is awful. its dirty. the colorado river is full of jet fuel but they say its clean, yeah right, thats why they are trying to get money to clean it up. the drinking water is contaminated with stuff all the time, we get flyers in the mail about how our water had exceeded its limits on bacteria. and its chock full of cholorine. there are alot of drugs here, so many kids drop out of school. there are drive bys and many theives here. i could go on

Also, I have two girls (not even in elementary school yet), and I have been researching the schools there and I have also found that Cibola HS is the best. Pueblo elementary and the middle school (all of those schools are on 20th, right?) are also highly rated. I figure the hospital is close to those schools, so my best bet is to find something near the schools there. I am glad to hear you say that is a good neighborhood.

Currently I live in Palm Beach, FL and I absolutely hate it. Besides not liking the weather and people, I struggle to pay rent & bills each month... so, it doesn't make sense to stay here. I have found your comments on Yuma the most insightful (along with a few other's postings). Although there is a ton of negative stuff in this forum about Yuma, I don't find most of the "arguments" to be substantial. I KNOW it's hot; that's not a big deal. I currently live in the land of the snowbirds; they impede traffic and fill up restaurants (usually not the restaurants I go to anyways)... not really an issue. The complaints against illegals (and mexicans, in general)... I'm also from San Diego and I *KNOW* that the illegals aren't the problem, I don't think the illegals in Yuma would be different. Why do some people seem to have a problem with all mexicans? Also, being from San Diego, I know all about traffic... For awhile, I worked in Carlsbad and lived in Mira Mesa; just a 20 minute drive (without traffic). Every Friday, after work, that 20 minute drive grew to over 2 hours. 45 minutes of that just trying to get down Mira Mesa Blvd. I'll take the 25mph snowbirds over that anytime.

Anyways, is that Cibola/Pueblo area a good area to find an apartment? Do you know of any good apartments in that area? All apartments look good when you see them online, right? So, if you actually know someone living in that area, I'd appreciate any info.
Thanks,
~Eric
Bottom Line - do not move here - with the constant spraying that goes on around here its a wonder I have not developed a severe case of asthma yet, my wife did and was very severe -they spray the fields here constantly and you cannot escape that very negative part of Yuma -if you you require anymore negative facts - please post a reply.

Yes what you heard is true Yuma is really as BAD as it SOUNDS, the weather is extremelly HOT - the schools here have a very low success rate for students (check it out) people who have lived here can tell - like we have - that there is really NOTHING positive to say about this place - the community is all about the SNOWBIRDS - they are very rude and they think that they say should be catered to at all times for anything - the education system here starting from kindergarten to college is really bad .we are attending AWC here and it is so unorganized and the word for YUMA -incompetence - let me tell you what do not consider moving here - Visit and find out about this place.

Its a great place Ive lived here for 2 years and most people who ive met here, wouldnt trade this place for any other.
My daughter has a great school(elementary) where she learns more than JUST ENGLISH like blue said.
She actually won a spelling award last month.
Crime here is no where near bigger cities like phoenix or tucson, neither is traffic.
Anyway,if you are interested in a tour, let me know.
I will give you a tour MAB - stop trying make this town sound like a frigging paradise - this armpit and yes it is the armpit of Arizona - the education system is so bad and yes it is well documented - the low wage jobs - I mean come on - you pay someone here 6.75 as a starting wage and perhaps two years down the road you might be making 7.00 an hour -what about the gangs here MAB -what about the near kidnapping of the fifteen year old girl just last week -the kidnapping and murder of that woman last month!!! What world are you living in? Go outside and smell the pesticide in the air and tell me that this palce is so wondeful. Grow up!!!!

Yes, I too can confirm to the original poster that Yuma doesn't have anything good about it. There's not one thing about it I can claim is worthy of mention. Sunshine-yes, but WAY TOO MUCH. Hot-yes, but WAY TOO HOT. It also has poverty, unemployment, immigration issues, and environmental issues just to start. The city is splattered all across the barren desert in patches like no one put any thought into how difficult it would be to get around. I could go on and on, but I won't. I guess I really can't say anything good about Yuma other than I'm blessed that I don't live there. PLEASE RECONSIDER MOVING TO YUMA.

I too have SAD and am currently living near a great lake, clouds galore...lol....I've been looking into those special lamps, luckily with March here I'm seeing the sun more and more. The whole southwest is great for sun, Yuma especially. Good luck!

Thumbs up I think Yuma's great!

Hello guys,
Well... I just got back from my 4-day business trip to Yuma. I got the position that I went out there for (congratulations to me! ) and I drove around quite a bit. On the 3rd day that I was there, I spent about 5-6 hours with a local real estate agent. She showed me many different areas and we looked at around a dozen houses in different areas. I was actually impressed by many of the communities. While the central Yuma area is not very impressive (housing wise), the out-laying areas are very nice, IMO. My 4th day (just this morning), I even bought a brand new house in the Via Chaparral area .

I've lived in many places - San Diego, Los Angeles, Cleveland & Columbus (Ohio), Houston, and currently Palm Beach (disgusting just like Fort Lauderdale and Miami) - so, I feel that I have a lot to compare Yuma to. Personally, I put Yuma 2nd on my list (next to San Diego). San Diego is just a 2.5 hour drive away and I didn't have to pay $700K for a house

In this forum, there are ALOT of people saying negative things about Yuma and a few saying positive things; I guess I just had to judge for myself. I will be joining MAB as a happy Yuma resident.
