Is there any place besides Anchorage that would be a good place to live in Alaska with decent services, etc?

The Kenai Peninsula towns are on the road system and most have modern services. Also Wasilla/Palmer, Eagle River and the many small towns in between Anchorage and Fairbanks along the highways.

Kodiak is pretty good, but if you're used to driving a lot, you'd probably end up with Rock Fever before the end of winter. And it's really hard on cars and trucks, all that salt air rots them pretty quickly.
