without actually going to the fireworks - any ideas?

My apartment is northwest of the balloon fiesta grounds and faces north, so I doubt I will see them from there.

Do many people go up to the peak to watch from there?

Lots of people go up to the peak. If you're near Balloon Fiesta park then perhaps tailgating or picnicking in a parking lot nearby.

I get the distinct impression the best place to view fireworks this year will be under an umbrella.
