Just saying No to sex doesn't do much for me because I'm too old.

Just saying No to drugs doesn't do much either, because they wouldn't help.

But saying No to fireworks this year matters a lot. Why can't the politicians declare this Fourth of July a fireworks-free holiday?

I sure hope folks in this area use good common sense and refrain from using fireworks in any form.

Because of the legislative process. Hopefully, they will change the law this year so that ALL fireworks can be banned if need be in the future.

As I recall:
Because state law prohibits it. Some legislators tried to change the law in the past about four years ago. Some legislators might try to change the law. The current governor wants to change the current law.

Because the NM fireworks industry made political donations to state legislators and lobbied for a law forbidding the outright ban of fireworks for any reason.

Doesn't that seem like overkill? I'm as worried about the fires as the next guy, my family has roots in Los Alamos and I'm just sick about the Jemez, it's one of my favorite places in the world.

I still plan to have my hose on (with a closing spray nozzle on the end) and let my 4 year-old run around with sparklers, and light a few little fountains in the driveway. I'll hose them all down when they're done and get them in the trash when they're cool.

I do hope that people will use their brains and not use aerial fireworks, but I don't see the the need for a "fireworks-free" 4th. A "common-sense" 4th seems perfectly applicable.

(It's worth noting that the Jemez fire is being blamed on a downed power line... perhaps rather than chasing smokers and little fireworks, we'd be best off adopting a zero-tolerance policy for power lines.)

We're setting off similar things, Zandy. In our driveway, with the water handy, and with adult supervision on everything, even the snakes and little popper things.

Just say no to powerlines. Let's start a Facebook group. And no to lightning, and to controlled burns because they have caused fires as well.

You two are exceptions to the rule. You're conscientious and cautious citizens, as well as caring parents.

Didn't the city ban fireworks altogether in city limits?

The Corrales Town Council members banned fireworks in their village.
