AT&T should give you suitable coverage in the metro area and along the interstates. But if you want to have coverage off the beaten path, you're gonna need Verizon, which gives the best statewide coverage hands down.
I had AT&T when I moved here (a couple months ago) and had no problems with it in town. I didn't travel out of town on small roads though.
I switched to T-mobile because it was so much cheaper...after asking this forum. Essentially the same service/reception. Again, I live right in town.
T-mobile allows you to have a small smart phone (Nokia Nuron) unlimited data plan for just $10 per month as opposed to everyone else with their $20 data plans or combined data and text plans. Also, their family plan was only $5 more for each extra phone.
I was worried that the lower rates would translate to poor service but it turned out fine.
I've got an iPhone, so I'm currently bound to AT&T. Where I am, the service stinks. Too many tall, bulky, compacted buildings = bad reception and dropped calls = endless frustration. Other iPhone users in the area, though, are fine with it. Right now I hate my service so much that I want to chuck my phone out the window, but I'm hoping it's a little better in Albuquerque.
If the iPhone ever hooks up with Verizon, I will likely make the switch from AT&T to Verizon.
When I was out there and we went hiking, I lost service at pretty much the same places as my Sprint and Verizon buddies did.
I kept my Sprint service when I moved here and haven't really had any serious problems. There are a few dead spots here and there, like anywhere else, but overall I'm happy with the service. I finally upgraded to a new phone and I've noticed some dead spots that my old phone encountered aren't dead on my new phone (yay!). No dead spots found yet for the data & internet service.
I had T-Mobile and it was probably the worst reception I've ever had, I just switched to AT&T this week and so far so good. I can now get phone calls at my house!
