No phone signal, no data signal, nothing on the Sprint website about it, although I did find a couple of posts from NM customers who posted today that their service was dead (1/21/12). Did anyone else lose service today? I discovered it too late to go by a Sprint store, and my cell is my only phone so no way to call Sprint *sigh*

*****UPDATE*****

Sprint cell service is out in assorted areas due to a cut fiber optic cable. No ETA on repair time yet from Sprint. Affecting 3G and 4G customers, not sure if it's affecting any other type service.

Gotta love forums - Sprint has one! I found the answer, posted by a tech on the Sprint forum about 10 minutes ago:

We don't really have too much information at this time. The initial report shows no estimated time for repair. It appears as though this outage was caused when someone inadvertently dug up a fiber optic line with an auger. The traffic cannot be rerouted, so the line must be fixed to restore service. I'm very sorry about the inconvenience. If I can speculate, the last time I saw a fiber cut, it was repaired within about 12 hours. That situation may have been completely different, but it may be reasonable to assume that this outage will likely play out similarly. It may take a bit longer than the previous outage because, according to the tech, the damage to the fiber is extensive. I hope this helps!

Don't know if that means only certain areas of town are affected or not, but it's definitely out in parts of 87109, 87110, 87111 and 87112.

Hmmnn, if they use any of the same transmission facilities, could be.

Sprint service is still out as of 9:55 a.m. today. Those of you on Sprint who are still able to make calls - check your phone. You may be roaming. If you are, call Sprint when the service is restored and ask for both a service credit and a roaming credit.

Still no ETA on repairs from Sprint.

Just heard that the severed fiber optic line actually belongs to CenturyLink, which is why the repair is taking so long. Sprint has to wait for CenturyLink to do the repairs, so, given my personal experiences with CenturyLink I'd guess it'll be a long wait!

Damage to a fiber optic cable line left some Sprint and Virgin Mobile users with shoddy cell phone service. Sprint officials said the cable, owned by Century Link, connects many of their New Mexico cell phone towers to the phone system. Crews are working to fix the cable but its unclear when service will go back to normal. Customers from the across the state have been reporting service issues since early Saturday.
