Our shore ice just let go here a week or 10 days ago. We've still got ice floating around. However, one distinct difference is that there is absolutely no multiyear ice. Those big ice floes that are so nice to take pictures of... are probably a thing of the past that will never be seen here again by anybody alive today.

I heard (third hand) that we had some of the last multiyear ice in the entire Arctic here this spring, and that despite the rather cool summer so far, it appears possible that the Arctic Ocean could be ice free by October of this year. That would be astounding, given that just 3-5 years ago the rate it was disappearing at lead to predictions of 30-50 years.

They won't have any ice, so they'll all be land bound for the summer. And just like over in Hudson Bay, they'll all be hungry enough to try eating anything all summer too...

I'm sure they'll adapt. They've made it this far...they'll make it for years to come somehow.

Let's hope so . . . it would be a shame to lose such a magnificent creature, especially if there was something we could have done about it!

They've survived up to this point and this planet has been warm before. I'm sure it's not the end of the world.

Anyone got a picture?
