Except they probably don't work well on a 70-300mm zoom. I haven't looked for reviews, but I'd really want to check that out before spending money on it. The 70-300mm lens isn't all that good at 300mm anyway...

There are several ways to get at least something in the way of a long lens for a Nikon without spending $10,000.

One is buy an older, used lense. The AiS lenses (manual focus and of course no VR) or even the pre-AI lenses, can be very good optically, and can on occasion be relatively inexpensive. There are also at least a couple of the Nikon mirror lenses that aren't terrible, and they don't cost an arm and a leg etiher (used).

I picked up a Canon SCC 800mm f/5.6 lens had been professionally converted to a Nikon F mount. It is old (1976), has manual focus, and is optically very good. It was not exactly cheap, but it didn't cost any $10,000 either. The problem is that I can't take pictures of anything I can't focus on; hence moving objects like birds and airplanes can be difficult if not impossible.
