My husband, children and I are looking to relocate to Alaska from Arkansas. We have found land around the Anderson area. Can anyone tell me about the area....all the good and all the bad. This will help in making the decision whether to buy land there or not. Thanks in advance!

Have you actually seen and walked the land that you hope to purchase? A visit is definitely needed first.

So you're moving to some place you've never been to? Good luck with that.

Is this some of the free land they are giving away? There isn't much around there that I remember. If you don't mind being semi isolated and can find a job in the area,I wish you luck! I suggest you go up there and check it out before you make the big move!

Wasn't that a few years ago? I remember reading about that on here...the town was giving away one acre plots with a 500 dollar deposit and the owner had to build a home within a certain amount of time. I heard that it ended up being a failure, and many of the lots were foreclosed on by the town.

I think it was around 2007 but I could be mistaken! I never heard much about the outcome but figured it probably didn't go over very well.
It seems like there were some small towns in the lower 48 doing the same thing! That may be where Anderson got the idea!

Anderson is two hours from the nearest doctor office or grocery store. Jobs are very limited.
Never buy land sight unseen.

I lived in Fayetteville, Arkansas and that general area for 14 years after I left Alaska. I've been back for a while. Obviously you know that the two states are very different. It's important that you visit Alaska first, maybe rent a place in a larger community. It is very expensive to live here.

I own quite a bit of property N. of Anderson (closer to Nenana), so I can tell you that, like everyone has said above, this is very isolated country. Be very careful about purchasing property even if you do put boots on the ground first. While you check it out bring along someone with experience who can assess issues such as drainage, water, access to food, building materials, etc. Lots of people are surprised to find that much of the spruce is too thin to build a cabin, for example.
