There is one other perhaps unintended reason why I like the (positive) rep system - I can go to my rep log and basically have a catalog of easily accessible links to old threads for future reading/reference. Beats sifting through search results.

I view the positive reps as "attaboys" or "attagirls".

I view the neg reps as insults from "cowans and eavesdroppers" who lurk in the shadows.

Looks like the results will be known by tomorrow...

Yes--good point, although the CD search system does work pretty well.
It's a slice of CD history just looking through the old reps though, and it is indeed a nice tidy reference log.
Yes I was with another forum (I later left) that had a rep system; they called it something else. People abused it right and left and their admin ended up dropping the whole thing. I don't think the admin here necessarily needs to do anything that drastic, but I appreciate the fact that they are at least looking into adopting new methods.

It does. The rep list just kind of comes in handy when I want to more expediently pull up a particular "Is it hot in Houston?" thread versus pulling them all up

good comment...and noted...glad that those wishing to disable are in the majority by a safe margin.

Well, I voted and I voted to disable the negatives. I ended up putting more thought into this than I intended to. I agree with the others that if a post needs to be reported then there is a mechanism for that. Otherwise, all we are left with is spreading the + love. It's a good thing!

Absolutely do away with them. It's a good way to keep annoying posters from any negative actions after you have put them on the "ignore" list. I would like to think that posters that I have chosen to ignore can't make their presence known by giving a negative rating for the dumbest of reasons.

Also, the reasons have been incredibly stupid, given not because you have been offensive, but because you for instance don't take the same political stance.

Getting rid of them certainly makes for a more positive experience here and relieves the moderators of having pests like me continually question negative ratings that I think have been given for petty reasons.

I didn't get to vote and of course would've voted to get rid of it.
