**I just saw an add for deep southerners opinions of KY which is what prompted this**
I feel like people often regard the Deep South or Deep Southerners opinions of all things Southern as the litmus test of what is or isn't "southern." What do those from the Upper South (VA, TN, NC, KY) think about the Deep South States or those from the Deep South (GA, SC, LA, MS, TX)?

They're called Deep South "Purists." There are a few on this board, but not many. From my experience, folks from GA have been the most high-toned in this regard, even questioning the Southern status of the likes of Louisiana and Arkansas.
Us folks from non-Deep South states yet undeniably still Southern (TN, TX, AR, OK, NC, KY, FL, VA) just have to roll our eyes at such arrogance.....part of it too, in some cases, is just some good-hearted ribbing.
For example, my buddy from Shreveport doesn't question the Southern status of Oklahoma at all, but another friend of mine from GA claims that neither OK/TX/AR/LA are truly Southern because they're west of Mississippi. That kind of thinking is flawed, but shouldn't really matter to us folks who know who we are and where we're from.

Sounds like he is confusing "southern" with "southeastern".
I'll admit I'm not sold on Oklahoma, but IMO Louisiana and Arkansas are 100% southern and the eastern half of Texas is as well.

I agree...sounds like this guy needs to get southern and southeastern lined out.
I think OK feels pretty Southern. It obviously feels a lot different from where I grew up in SW VA which is central Appalachia but the culture of OK certainly feels southern to me...maybe a different type of southern, but southern nevertheless.

My ex from Atlanta was like that. She was stern that anything west of Louisiana was part of the Midwest or Southwest and not the South.
All in all, there are many places that are southern, but not strictly southern. Texas and Florida leap to mind.
IMO the deep south would start at the NE corner of Louisiana and arc to just below the Charlotte suburbs. The line would run between Atlanta and Macon.

Yeah I agree...Georgia is culturally Deep South, but north of Macon is not so much. I wouldn't consider Atlanta to match up with the rest of the Deep South, and the North Georgia mountains are more Appalachia. So it's not as simple as lumping entire states into the mix.
I don't hear anything about this issue except on city-data. This is not on weighing on people's minds in real life. I moved to GA from NC years ago and never once heard anything about NC not being southern.

Ditto.....It's the same situation for me. In SW Virginia where I grew up I never considered myself anything but Southern...or Appalachian culturally but apparently according to random folk on city-data i'm northeastern, mid-atlantic, or some other plethora of things. In the real world I've never heard anyone outside of the NOVAites say they consider VA anything but Southern....but oh well.
