The big news was the no hitter by Joe Musgrove on Friday, the first no hitter in Padres history. They swept all 3 games in Arlington against the Rangers and so far have split 2 games of a 4 game series in Pittsburgh. They'll come home for 6 games, first look at the Dodgers on Friday, and than the Brewers follow them into town Monday evening. Elsewhere in the division the D'Backs won 2 of 3 against the Reds but followed it up with a 2 game series sweep at the hands of the A's, the Giants have split 2 games of a 3 game series with the Reds, and the Rockies started a 3 game series in LA against the Dodgers on Tuesday with the Dodgers winning game 1. On tap for this weekend in the division: D'Backs are in DC to play 4 at the Nats in a series that begins on Tuesday, Rockies play the Mets in Denver for 3 games, and the Giants are in Miami for 3 against the Marlins. Dodgers continue to lead the way at a major league best 9-2, Padres are 1.5 back, Giants are 2 back at 7-4, D'Backs are 4-8 and 5.5 back while the Rockies are 3-8 6 games behind the Dodgers.

Default 10-7

Luckily they got the Sunday game against the Dodgers, otherwise the weekend would've been a total disaster as they had ample opportunities to win not only in regulation Friday night but also in extra's, and than on Saturday let Clayton Kershaw off the hook numerous times, and really a split in Pittsburgh to begin the week wasn't exactly great either. The Pirates are playing better, but that's a team you should be winning 3 games if not all 4 games against. Dodgers started the week with a sweep of the Rockies, Rockies finished the week losing 2 of 3 at home to the Mets, Giants won 2 of 3 at home vs. the Reds and than lost 2 of 3 in Miami against the Marlins, while the D'Backs lost 2 home games to the A's and than split 4 in DC against the Nationals. Dodgers remain on top not only in the division but in the entire sport at 13-3, Padres and Giants (9-6) are each 3.5 back, Arizona 6-10 is 7 back, while the 4-12 Rockies are 9 back.

Padres play the Brewers at home for 3 before heading up the coast for 4 games at Dodger Stadium in LA to conclude the week, Dodgers start the week with 2 interleague games in Seattle beginning Monday, D'Backs stay out East for all 6 games, 3 in Cincinnati to start, and 3 in Cobb County, Georgia to end the week and the road trip, Rockies have a 5 game schedule in Denver; 2 to start the week in Denver, and they end the week and the hometand with the Phillies in Denver, while the Giants will be in Philly for 3 with the Phillies beginning on Monday and than have a rematch with the Marlins as the Fish come into the city by the Bay for 4 beginning on Thursday night.

Default 13-11

The week certainly didn’t start off well with a 3 game sweep at the hands of the Brewers, Dinelson Lamet leaving his season debut after 2 innings, and than playing 4 games against the Dodgers in LA, the Dodgers if they win the series could’ve put the Padres in serious catchup position, but they didn’t need that as the Padres ended up winning 3 of the 4 games. Dodgers started the week with a 2 game split in Seattle, Colorado took 2 from Houston before taking 2 of 3 from the Phillies, the D’Backs swept 3 from Cincinnati before taking 2 of 3 from Atlanta, including Madison Bumgarner throwing a no hitter in a 7 inning double header on Sunday, and the Giants took 2 of 3 in Philadelphia before taking 3 of 4 from the Marlins by the Bay. Dodgers are still in first at 15-7, Giants are 14-8 and 1 back, Pads are 3 back, Arizona is 4 back at 11-11, and the Rockies are 6.5 back at 8-13.

We’ll see if they can build off this Dodgers series, they certainly didn’t last week. Following a Monday off day they’ll head to Phoenix for a quick 2 games with the Snakes, and come home for 3 games with the Giants beginning on Friday. D’Backs will follow with 4 games at home vs. the Rockies, Giants will precede the visit to San Diego by playing the Rockies at home for 3, while the Dodgers will have a Central week with 3 in LA against the Reds and then 4 in Milwaukee against the Brewers

Default 16-13

Split 2 games in Arizona, and then won 2 of 3 against the Giants who came into the series in first place due to the struggles of the Dodgers. D’Backs followed with 3 of 4 against the Rockies, Giants started the week winning 2 of 3 against the Rockies, and the Dodgers went 2-5 this week following a 2-4 week last week losing 2 of 3 at home to Cincinnati and losing 3 of 4 in Milwaukee over the weekend, I believe in one of the Brewer games the Dodgers had a lead on a 4 separate occasions and the Brewers came back each time. Giants at 17-11 will leave San Diego in first place but have the 17-12 Dodgers (half game behind), Padres (1.5 back), and the 15-13 D’Backs (2 behind) all within 2 games of the Giants while the Rockies sit last at 10-18 and 7 games back.

They start the week at home with 3 against the Pirates, and following a Thursday off day, they’ll go to San Francisco for the first time this season to close out the week. Giants will start the week with 3 games in Denver starting Monday, Rockies end the week with 3 games in St. Louis, D’Backs travel east for 6 games; 3 in Florida vs. the Marlins starting Tuesday and than 3 in Queens over the weekend, while the Dodgers play 3 in Chicago vs. the Cubs and than play the first of the Freeway Series at the Big A in Anaheim over the weekend

Default 19-16

Won 2 of 3 vs. the Pirates before losing 2 of 3 in San Francisco. Giants started the week losing 2 of 3 in Denver to the Rockies, Rockies followed with a 3 game series sweep in St. Louis, Dodgers got swept in 3 games in Chicago before going to the Big A in Anaheim and losing 2 of 3, and the D’Backs had a miserable week getting swept in Miami against the Marlins, and followed that up with a 3 game series sweep in Queens, NY against the Mets. Giants are 20-14, 1.5 up on the Padres, Dodgers are 18-17 and 2.5 back, D’Backs after 6 straight losses drop to 15-19 and 5 back, and the Rockies are 12-22 and 8 games behind the Giants.

Padres are one of only 12 teams that play on Monday evening where they’ll start a 3 game series in Denver vs. the Rockies, and they’ll have Thursday off before heading home for 3 games with the Cardinals. Rockies follow with 4 games at home against Cincinnati, Dodgers have 2 at home against the Mariners starting Tuesday, and then 3 against the Marlins at home beginning on Friday, while the D’backs will look to bounce back with a 4 game series at home against the Marlins on Monday and then the Nats come into Phoenix for the weekend for 3 games beginning on Friday, and the Giants have a 2 game series against the Rangers beginning on Monday before starting a 4 game series in Pittsburgh on Thursday following a Wednesday off day.

Default 2022: 0-0

Welp, last year was a face plant. Bob Melvin comes south as new manager but the roster is mostly the same as last year. They are still trying to unload Eric Hosmer & Wil Myers to no avail but Yu Darvish, Blake Snell & Joe Musgrove continue to lead the rotation. Only downside is Tatis out until probably the all star break. Melvin is a great manager, he's consistently won with nothing in Oakland and now he's actually got something to work with, I think he gets something to work.

Best case scenario: Out of the big 3 additions (Darvish, Musgrove, Snell), Musgrove was the only one that was consistent. With a year under their belt, and in Snell's case another year adjusting to a new league Darvish and Snell both turn in potential Cy year's, Musgrove continues to fly under the radar and most of all Chris Padduck rebounds from two disappointing seasons.

Worst case scenario: Darvish has another bad year, Snell still can't pitch deep into games, Padduck is even worse than he was last year, Musgrove regresses, and another team like the Giants last year (maybe them again or the Rockies) comes out of nowhere and nips the Pads in the divisional standings.

My predictions: The last 3 months of last year was really, really bad, and as the losses mounted it seems like Jayce Tingler had less and less control. That problem won't happen with Melvin at the helm. He'll steady the ship enough in the first 3 months without Tatis. It won't be enough for a division crown, but it's enough for a 2nd place finish and a Wildcard and a couple series rounds before I think the Dodgers will be too much in the NLCS. 93-69; 2nd place in NL West, Wildcard.

Season kicks off Thursday with 4 games in Arizona. Madison Bumgarner (7-10, 4.67 in '21) starts for the Snakes while Darvish (8-11, 4.22 in '21) takes the ball for the Fathers with game time slated for around 9:40.

Default 0-1

Padres 2 @ D'backs 4.

Well, that was pretty terrible. D'Backs had 0 hits, and had 1 runner in scoring position heading into the 9th, and than the bullpen was a tire fire inferno in the 9th. But before we get to the end, let's see how they got to the 9th with a lead. Eric Hosmer had a 2 out double in the 2nd but Wil Myers ended the inning with a strikeout. Ha-Seong Kim walked to lead off the 3rd, he stole second, advanced to 3rd on an Austin Nola ground out, and then 3 straight walks to Manny Machado, Jake Cronenworth and Luke Voit made it 1-0 but Myers ended any other future runs with a strikeout to end the inning. Jurickson Profar had a 1 out single in the 4th and Kim would score 3 batters later on a Nola RBI single. D'backs got their first runner to 2nd when Cooper Hummel walked following a Seth Beer single. Robert Suarez making his MLB debut came into start the 9th and preceded to walk Christian Walker on 4 pitches, walked Pavin Smith on 5 pitches, and than loaded the bases hitting Carson Kelly with a pitch. Craig Stammen was relieved to try to put out the inferno but he just threw gasoline on the fire in a span of 2 pitches; pitch number 1 was a wild pitch which made it a 2-1 game, and put runners on 2nd & 3rd with 0 outs; pitch number 2 was devoured by Beer into RF for the walk off home run. Madison Bumgarner allowed 1 run on 1 hit with 4 walks and 2 strikeouts in 3 innings and Joe Mantiply had a walk and a strikeout in a hitless inning for the win. Yu Darvish had 4 walks, 3 strikeouts in 6 scoreless & hitless innings, Tim Hill (1st hold) had 2 hits allowed in 2/3 of an inning, Pierce Johnson (1st hold) had 3 strikeouts and 1 walk in 1.1 hitless innings, Suarez (0-1) allowed 3 runs on 2 walks and a hit by pitch, and Stammen (1st blown save) allowed 1 run on 1 hit with a home run.

Game 2 of the series takes place Friday night; Merill Kelly (7-11, 4.44 in '21) starts for the Snakes against Sean Manaea (11-10, 3.91 in '21 with the A's) with game time slated for 9:40.

Default 1-1

Padres 3 @ D'Backs.

For the second straight night, the pads carried a no hitter into the 7th, luckily they were able to hold this one down. Jake Cronenworth singled with 2 outs and Luke Voit walked, but Eric Hosmer struck out to end the inning. Hosmer had a 1 out single in the 4th, Jurickson profar followed with a walk, but Wil Myers struck out and C.J. Abrams grounded out. Hosmer had a 1 out single in the 6th and Profar followed with a hoem run to right to put the Pads up 2-0. Jorge Alfaro had a leadoff double in the 7th, moved to 3rd on a sac bunt, but Manny Machado struck out and following an intentional walk to Cronenworth Voit flied out to end the inning. Hosmer doubled to lead off the 8th, and scored the games final run on an error. David Peralta had the D'Backs first base hit of the night leading off the 8th, 2 batters later Geraldo Perdoma had a base hit bringing the tying run to the plate but Pavin Smith popped up and Seth Beer flied out to center. Merrill Kelly had 7 strikeouts, 2 walks, and 4 hits in 4 innings, Oliver Perez (0-1) allowed 2 runs on 2 hits (1 home run) in 2/3 of an inning. Sean Manaea (1-0) had 1 walk, and 7 strikeouts in 7 hitless innings, Tim Hill (1st hold) and Dinelson Lamet (1st hold) allowed the only 2 hits in a combined 1 inning, and Taylor Rogers (1st save) 1 day after coming over from the Twins in a trade had a 1-2-3 9th with a strikeout.

Game 3 of the series goes on Saturday. Joe Musgrove (11-9, 3.18 last year) starts for the Pads opposed by Zach Davies (6-12, 5.78 last year with the Cubs) making his first start for the Snakes. Game time scheduled around 8:10.

Default 2-1

Padres 5 @ D’Backs 2.

Ketel Marte singled with 1 out in the first, David Peralta followed with an RBI double, but Christian Walker struck out and Pavin Smith flied out to end the inning. Sergio Alcantara doubled with 2 outs in the second but Joe Musgrove struck out Jose Herrera to end the inning. A Manny Machado 2 out doubled scored Matt Beaty to tie the score at 1, he scored on a Jake Cronenworth single to put the Pads in front at 2-1, Luke Voit followed with a single, but Eric Hosmer ended the inning with a ground out. Peralta would have his second RBI of the night in the 6th with a home run to left-center. Pads started the 7th with a leadoff double from Wil Myers but 2 strikeouts sandwiched around a ground out only moved Myers as far as 3rd and kept it a 2-2 game. Machado singled leading off the 8th, stole second, went to 3rd on a wild pitch, Voit walked, Hosmer singled scoring Machado and moving Voit to 3rd, and an Austin Nola sac fly made it a 4-2 game. C.J. Abrams singled leading off the 9th, moved to second on a passed ball, a Trent Grisham grounder moved him to 3rd, and scored on a Jose Azocar single. Musgrove allowed 2 runs on 5 hits (1 home run) with 8 strikeouts in 6 innings. Steven Wilson (1-0) picks up the win in his MLB debut with a walk and strikeout in a hitless inning, Pierce Johnson (2nd hold) had a walk and a strikeout in a hitless inning, and Taylor Rogers (2nd save) pitched a 1-2-3 9th his second save in as many opportunities. Zach Davies allowed 2 runs on 4 hits with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts in 5 innings and Ian Kennedy (0-1) allowed 2 runs on 2 hits with a walk in 1 inning. Maybe if Preller makes the Paddack/Pagan for Rogers trade on Wednesday instead of Thursday, maybe Rogers is able to pitch on Thursday and the Pads are 3-0 instead of 2-1?? Life’s mysteries. In that case he probably isn’t pitching this game though, or possibly the Friday game. Either way, I think a better chance to be 3-0 at this point regardless. Hopefully that game doesn’t come back to bite them at some point this year.

Pads go for the series win on Sunday in the finale. Blake Snell (7-6, 4.20 in ‘21) starts for the Padres while Caleb Smith (4-9, 4.83 last year) gets the ball for the Snakes with game time scheduled for 4:10.

Default 3-1

Pads 10 @ D’Backs 5.

Ketel Marte had a 1 out double, following a fly out by David Peralta Marte would steal 3rd, but Christian Walker struck out to end the inning. Jake Cronenworth reached on an error to start the 2nd, back to back walks to Luke Voit and Wil Myers loaded the bases before Slam Diego returned in 2022 as Jurickson Profar launched the Pads first grand slam of the season, and for good measure Jorge Alfaro followed with a home run for a 5-0 lead, Ha-Seong Kim walked which brought an end to Caleb Smith’s afternoon having not retired a batter in the 2nd inning, Trent Grisham singled, but Austin Nola lined out, Manny Machada struck out, and Cronenworth flied out to end the inning. Kim lead of the 4th with a triple and scored 2 batters later on a Nola sac fly. Daulton Varsho and Geraldo Perdomo had 2 out walks in the bottom half but Jake McCarthy ended the inning with a strikeout. Cronenworth reached on another error to begin the 5th, Voit walked, each runner advanced on a Myers fly out, and back to back wild pitches scored both Cronenworth and Voit. Kim started the 6th with a hit by pitch, 2 batters later Nola singled, a Manny Machado double made it 9-0, and a Cronenworth sac fly made it 10-0, Voit followed with a walk, but Myers ended the inning with a strikeout, and Walker would put the Snakes on the board in the bottom half with a home run. Marte walked with 1 out in the 8th, Walker drew a 2 out walk, and Carson Kelly ended the inning with a ground out. Perdomo walked with 1 out in the 9th, McCarthy and Drew Ellis each followed with singles for a 10-2, and Cooper Hummel completed the scoring with his first career home run. Blake Snell was a late scratch from this start so Nabil Crismatt made the spot start allowing 1 hit, 3 walks, and 4 strikeouts over 3 scoreless innings and Austin Adams (1-0) had 3 walks and 1 strikeout in 1 hitless inning. Smith (0-1) allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 2 hits (2 home runs) with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts in 1+ inning of work. In other West action from this weekend, the Dodgers lose 2 of 3 in Colorado, and the Giants and Marlins played 3 one run games in San Francisco with the Giants winning 2 of the 3. Padres lead the division, Giants and Rockies are a half game back, Dodgers are 1.5 back while the D’Backs are 2 games back.

The road trip continues with 3 by the Bay in San Francisco beginning on Monday evening. Nick Martinez (3-8, 5.66 in 2017) has spent the last 4 years pitching in Japan and last appeared in an MLB game in 2017 will return to the States and takes the ball for the Pads, while the Giants will give the ball to Alex Wood (10-4, 3.83 in 2021). Game time scheduled for 9:45.
