Description: Arts Festival Oklahoma is a three-day event held over the Labor Day weekend each year (Sat–Mon). This arts festival has a wide variety of fine arts, crafts, concessionaires, performing artists, and a children’s creative center, where kids can create their own works of art.In 2009, the festival celebrated its 31st year. The purpose of Arts Festival Oklahoma is to promote and showcase the work of local and out-of-state artists and artisans to provide cultural awareness and opportunities and to present and promote the performing arts. The festival is sponsored by Oklahoma City Community College, the Central Art Association, the South Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce and Women of the South. Description: This is an event that creates an awareness of the different kinds of black art that exists. The day begins with opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. and continues until 8 p.m. The festival offers live performances, artwork like painting and sculpture, storytelling, and food. Past performers include the Sankofa African Percussion Ensemble, the Cailin Rua Irish Dance Company, the Coleman Family Singers, and Aakhu Bastet Sahu. Carnival food is available, such as hot dogs, nachos, sandwiches, chips, and Indian Tacos. The arts and crafts vendors sell things like books, oils, artwork, pottery, and figurines. There is a children’s village that offers storytelling, face painting, finger painting, and more.This free event is held outdoors at Edwards Park and 500 to 800 people typically attend.

Description: If your child likes Thomas the Tank Engine, head for the Oklahoma Railway Museum in Sept and Oct. Thomas’s visit in 2009 is his sixth year visiting the city. Besides rides pulled by the famous engine, there is live entertainment for the children, including Marty the Magician out of Missouri, Ms. Lisa Children’s music from Dallas, the Singing Brakeman from Denver, and Mom-O the Clown from Oklahoma City. This event is held indoors and outdoors and takes place rain or shine. Day out with Thomas tickets can be purchased online and are $18. This price is subject to change. Parking is free. Typically more than 13,000 people attend this event every year.

Description: For 11 days in Sept, the Oklahoma State Fair takes place at State Fair Park, overtaking 190 acres inside the fence line area. This annual event attracts approximately one million visitors. There are exhibit buildings, a carnival-style midway, concert performances, and Disney on Ice in week one and a rodeo in week two. There are cooking, needlecraft, and livestock competitions and demonstrations and guests will find almost anything they are hungry for from the many food vendors. Visitors will want to visit the Made in Oklahoma building where Oklahoma businesses and products are highlighted. Police patrol the grounds regularly to ensure safety.

Description: Held at the Myriad Botanical Gardens, the Creepy Conservatory educates the public on conservation. It is a one-day event and is usually held the third or fourth Sat of Oct. Exotic animal displays featuring critter handlers educate children on different species of animals living in the rain forest. There is a tropical “Trick or Treat” trail, arts, crafts and other fun kid activities. Candy is typically handed out. Costumes are encouraged, but not required. Usually 500 to 600 people attend. Creepy Conservatory is included with admission to the Myriad Botanical Gardens.. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors 62 and over and students 13 to 18 or with valid college ID, $3 for children 4 to 12, and free for children under 12.

Description: Since 2005, the Harn has held a safe trick-or-treat event for young children. Besides trick-or-treating, there are many historic games and crafts for the children, such as pumpkin bowling, a ring toss on a witch’s hat, roasting marshmallows, listening to ghost stories by the fire, and hayrides.The event is held both indoors and outdoors. The buildings are heated and provide shelter from the rain. In 2008, 350 children attended. There is ample free parking available. Picture taking is encouraged.Admission is $3 for children. Adults accompanying a child are free. Currently, tickets can only be purchased upon arrival.
